Isaiah 53:2 For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him. (ESV)
A few hundred years later, John wrote:
John 1:45–46 [45] Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” [46] Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” (ESV)
It would be quite hurting if a person would remark regarding your home town—would anything good would come out of it? Or if any good student would ever come from your school? Nathanael remarked whether anything good would come out of Nazareth. Would you get angry? Jesus grew up there.
This fulfilled Isaiah 53:2, who pointed to the unassuming background and growth of the chosen one of God, the Messiah, who would die on the cross for the sins of the world! We see further prophecies in the next verses:-
Isaiah 53:4–5 [4] Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. [5] But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. (ESV)
Luke 22:44 spoke of the agony of Jesus Christ—“And being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. (ESV)” The piercing of 53:5 reminds us of its similarity with the crucifixion deployed by the Romans. But the amazing thing is that the Roman empire would not arrive in world history for another few hundred years!
REFLECTION: Many of us had parents who suffered for us, in order to raise us up. Would we also remember the LORD who suffered greatly for us?
Isaiah 53:7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth. (ESV)
Mark 14:60–61 [60] And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?” [61] But he remained silent and made no answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” (ESV)
Jesus remained silent throughout His trial before the authorities. He kept silent, except for the important point regarding the point of His life—He is the Son of God.
APPLICATION: These fulfilled prophecies, and many others in the Scriptures, point to the God who is lord over history and time. Would you trust in Him today for your lives and future?
