QT 22/05/2025 Thu. Jeremiah 10. The One True God in a World of Many Idols
READ http://www.esv.org/jer10
Jeremiah 10 is a prophetic chapter in the Old Testament that contrasts the true, living God of Israel with the idols of the nations—crafted by human hands and devoid of real power. The chapter emphasises the supremacy of God, the futility of idolatry, and the call for believers to trust in the Lord alone.
Scripture Focus:
Jeremiah 10:6–7 [6] There is none like you, O LORD; you are great, and your name is great in might. [7] Who would not fear you, O King of the nations? For this is your due; for among all the wise ones of the nations and in all their kingdoms there is none like you. (ESV)
✝️ Devotional Reflection:
In a time when people were turning to idols—man-made gods fashioned from wood and adorned with silver and gold—Jeremiah speaks a bold and necessary truth: "The gods that did not make the heavens and the earth shall perish" (v. 11).
These idols, though beautiful and attractive at times, are powerless even though a person might have “paid” a huge some of money to have them “installed” one way of another. They cannot speak, move, or save. Do note that in virtually ALL these idol-honouring festivals of all kinds throughout the ages, the idols HAD to be physically carried around to enable them to “participate” in the various ceremonies.
But the Lord—the true and living God—is not like them. He made the heavens by His wisdom and the earth by His understanding (v. 12). He controls the weather, gives rain, and commands nature. He is alive, powerful, and personal.
As believers today, we may not bow down to physical idols, but we can easily elevate other things above God: success, comfort, academics, glory accrued from children’s accomplishments, relationships, or even religion itself. Jeremiah 10 challenges us to re-centre our hearts on the One who truly reigns.
🙏 Application:
(1) Reject modern idols: Identify anything that’s replacing God's place in your life—status, wealth, or even self.
(2) Reaffirm God’s greatness: Worship Him not just with songs, but with your trust, obedience, and life choices.
(3) Rely on the living God: When you feel powerless or overwhelmed, remember the One who created the universe is your Father in heaven.
🛐 Prayer:
Lord, help me see through the empty promises of the world. I confess that I sometimes give my heart to things that cannot save or satisfy. You alone are God. Teach me to trust in You and live for Your glory. In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen.
