Imagine a Christian who constantly gets pulled into hostile arguments on social media. Every disagreement turns into sarcasm, insults, or rage-filled comments. Afterward, they feel convicted but also trapped — “That’s just who I am.” Is that all there is in the end. How can Romans 6 speak directly into that moment. Let’s unpack its application.
Scripture Focus: “So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.” — Romans 6:11 (ESV)
Paul is not telling believers to pretend sin no longer exists. He is reminding them that, through union with Christ, sin is no longer their master. Earlier in the chapter, Paul explains that believers have been united with Christ in His death and resurrection. Because Jesus died to sin and rose again, those who belong to Him now share in a new identity.
“Consider yourselves” means to reckon it as true — to consciously live from what God has already declared. Overcoming sin and similar struggles entails proper considering. The Christian life is not powered by sheer willpower but by believing and walking in the reality of what Christ has accomplished.
Being “dead to sin” does not mean temptation disappears. It means sin’s authority has been broken. Before Christ, sin ruled like a tyrant. In Christ, believers have been made alive to God, awakened to fellowship, obedience, holiness, and joy in Him.
This verse also confronts two common errors:
- Despair: “I’ll never change.”
- Complacency: “Sin doesn’t matter.”
Paul rejects both. In Christ, real transformation is possible because a real spiritual change has already taken place. A practical way to apply this verse is to preach this truth to yourself when temptation comes:
- “This sin is not my master.”
- “I belong to Christ.”
- “I am alive to God.”
- “I do not have to obey sinful desires.”
The gospel does not merely forgive believers; it creates a new way of living.
Application Example: Let’s return to the person who is struggling with anger online. What can he or she do in light of Romans 6? The phrase “That’s just who I am” is not applicable because that might become an excuse to inflict all sorts of harm onto others.
Instead of identifying themselves by the old pattern, begin to say:
- “In Christ, I am not controlled by anger.”
- “I do not have to respond like the world responds.”
- “I am alive to God, so I can reflect Christ even online.”
Practically, this might look like:
- pausing before replying,
- praying before posting,
- deleting a harsh comment instead of sending it,
- choosing gentleness over winning the argument,
- logging off when pride and rage start rising.
The change is not merely behavior management. It comes from a new identity. The believer is learning to live from the truth that sin is no longer their ruler.
Another everyday example is pornography, gossip, substance abuse, bitterness, or dishonest business practices. In each case, Romans 6:11 calls Christians to stop seeing themselves as helpless slaves to sin and to start living as people made alive in Christ.
The verse is deeply practical:
- Your old impulses may still speak.
- Temptation may still feel strong.
- But in Christ, temptation is no longer ultimate authority.
The Christian life becomes a daily choice to believe what God says is true and act accordingly.
Prayer
Father, thank You that through Jesus Christ I am no longer enslaved to sin. Teach me to live in the truth of my new identity. Strengthen me to resist temptation and to walk in holiness, joy, and obedience. Help me set my mind on what is true in Christ. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
