What if Jesus said the problem isn’t that you’re not smart… it’s that you’re not thinking far enough ahead? In Luke 16, He flips everything—money, success, and eternity—and asks: are you living for what fades, or what lasts forever? Let’s dive in.

In Luke 16, Jesus gives us a surprising example: a dishonest manager who is praised—not for his dishonesty—but for his shrewdness. He acted decisively in light of his future. Jesus uses this to challenge His followers: Are we as thoughtful and intentional about eternal matters as we are about temporary ones?

We plan, save, and strategise for life on earth. Yet how often do we invest that same energy into what will last forever? Jesus calls us to a deeper wisdom—a spiritual shrewdness. This means living today with eternity in view. As He taught earlier, we are to “provide… for yourselves… a treasure in heaven that will never fail” (Luke 12:33). Earthly wealth fades, but what is done for God endures.

(1) One Master, Not Two

The heart of the issue is allegiance. Jesus makes it plain: “You cannot serve God and money.” There is no middle ground. Money itself isn’t the enemy, but it is a powerful rival for our devotion.

True faith produces a reordered life. When God becomes our Master, everything else—our time, our finances, our ambitions—falls under His authority. The question is not whether we have resources, but whether those resources have us, captured us, enslaved us?

(2) Faithfulness in the Small Things

Jesus also reminds us that faithfulness isn’t proven in big, dramatic moments, but in the quiet, daily choices. “One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much.”

How we handle small responsibilities—our money, our integrity, our private decisions—reveals the true condition of our hearts. God is not merely watching outcomes; He is shaping character.

(3) The Kingdom Fulfilled in Christ

Luke 16 points to a turning point in history: “The Law and the Prophets were until John; since then the good news of the kingdom of God is preached” (v. 16). The kingdom is not just future—it has broken into the present through Christ.

This means God’s standards have not been lowered—they have been fulfilled and intensified. External religion is no longer enough; God desires transformed hearts. Even topics like divorce and remarriage are addressed with sobering clarity, reminding us that God’s design for covenant faithfulness reflects His own unchanging nature.

(4) A Great Reversal

The chapter closes with the story of the rich man and Lazarus—a vivid picture of eternal reality. Earthly status is overturned. Comfort and success in this life are no guarantee of God’s favour, and suffering is not a sign of His absence.

The rich man lived without regard for God or others, and eternity revealed the true weight of his choices. Lazarus, though poor and afflicted, was received into comfort.

This is the ultimate call to spiritual shrewdness: live now in light of what comes next.

Reflection

(a) Am I investing more thought into my earthly future than my eternal one?
(b) What competes with God for first place in my heart?
(c) How am I using what God has entrusted to me for His kingdom?

Prayer

Lord, give me wisdom to live for what truly matters. Guard my heart from being ruled by money or comfort. Teach me to be faithful in small things and bold in eternal priorities. Help me to see this life through the lens of Your kingdom and to store up treasure in heaven. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
