Resurrection Was Always Part of the Story. Don’t edit it away. Don’t minimise it. This was the path that Jesus refused to avoid. How about you?
Today, we want to focus on Mark 10:32–34, the Road to the Cross.
In Mark 10:32–34, Jesus and His disciples are on the road to Jerusalem. The scene is striking: Jesus walks ahead, determined, while the disciples follow with amazement and fear. Jesus knows exactly what awaits Him—betrayal, humiliation, suffering, and death—yet He moves forward deliberately.
This moment reveals the courage and mission of Christ. He is not a victim of circumstance. He is the willing Saviour moving toward the cross for the redemption of sinners.
“The Son of Man will be delivered… they will mock him… flog him… kill him. And after three days he will rise.” Three key truths emerge from this passage.
(1) Jesus Walked Toward Suffering with Purpose
Jesus clearly foretells His suffering. Nothing about the cross will surprise Him. Every insult, every lash, and every moment of pain lies ahead in full view. Yet He continues walking.
This reminds us that the cross was intentional. Jesus willingly embraced suffering out of love for us. As He later declares in Gospel of John 10:18, no one takes His life from Him—He lays it down willingly. For believers, this deepens our understanding of grace. Our salvation was not accidental; it was not that Jesus had no choice; it was not that history as it it was something foisted on Him. No, it was planned and pursued by Christ.
Reflection: As you participate in the Kingdom of Heaven and see to its development on earth as it is in heaven, are you willing to pay the price of inconvenience, loss of convenience and even some form of loss of freedom for the sake of that Kingdom? Sacrifice in the Kingdom of Heaven do not always start with martydorm, like John the Baptist. Perhaps you can start with sacrificing one day of life? One hundred dollar of your finance? One misunderstanding or insult, just because you identify as the follower of Jesus? Start with the simple things first.
(2) The Disciples Felt Both Awe and Fear
Mark records an interesting contrast: They were amazed. They were afraid. They sensed the weight of the moment but did not yet fully understand it. Often, the path of following Jesus can feel the same. God’s plans can fill us with wonder while also confronting us with uncertainty.
Faith sometimes means following Jesus even when we do not fully understand where the road leads. The disciples would later realize that this frightening journey to Jerusalem was actually the path to the greatest victory in history.
(3) The Resurrection Was Always Part of the Story
Even while predicting His suffering, Jesus includes a promise: “After three days he will rise.” The cross is not the end of the story. Resurrection follows suffering. This pattern—suffering followed by glory—runs throughout the Christian life. Because Christ rose, suffering and death never have the final word for those who trust Him.
Reflection: The hope of the resurrection transforms how believers face hardship today. Even some of the gurus and so-called “consultants” of today are all fixated on avoiding pain and inconvenience at all costs. How can these counseling suggestions fit this narrative—that the suffering, pain and the resurrection, were always part of Jesus’ story?
Reflection
Jesus walked ahead of His disciples toward the cross. Today, He still walks ahead of us on every road we travel. When life feels uncertain, frightening, or costly, remember: our Saviour has already gone before us—and He leads us toward resurrection life.
🙏 Prayer
Heavenly Father. We come before You with humble hearts, remembering the road Your Son walked for our salvation. Thank You for sending Jesus, who willingly went up to Jerusalem knowing the suffering that awaited Him. Thank You for Your great love that planned redemption even through the cross.
Father, we praise You for Your mercy and grace. When we consider how Christ was mocked, rejected, and crucified for our sins, we are reminded of the depth of Your love for us. Help us never to take that sacrifice lightly.
Lord, when we face fear, uncertainty, or hardship in our own lives, teach us to trust You. Just as Jesus walked faithfully in obedience to Your will, give us strength to follow wherever You lead. Fill our hearts with courage and faith when the path before us seems difficult.
Thank You, Father, that the cross was not the end. Thank You that You raised Your Son from the dead and gave us the living hope of the resurrection. Help us live each day in that hope, trusting in Your power, Your promises, and Your plan. Shape our hearts to love You more, obey You more faithfully, and reflect the character of Christ in all we do. We pray all this in the name of Your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.
