Key Verse: “And they shall know that I am the Lord—that I have spoken in my jealousy—when I spend my fury upon them.” (Ezekiel 5:13)
Ezekiel 5 paints a sobering picture of God's righteous judgment on Jerusalem. It’s a graphic portrayal of the consequences of covenant unfaithfulness. The people of God, chosen and placed "in the centre of the nations," had been given the Word, the law, and the presence of God—but they rebelled and defiled His sanctuary.
This passage reminds us that God does not tolerate sin lightly, especially from those who claim His name. His discipline is not arbitrary—it flows from deep love and divine jealousy, a desire for holiness and restored relationship.
Yet even in wrath, there’s a glimpse of hope. The small portion of hair tucked into Ezekiel’s robe (v.3) symbolises a remnant. God always preserves a faithful few—a picture fulfilled in the ultimate Remnant, Jesus Christ, through whom salvation and restoration come.
Ezekiel 5:3 speaks profoundly to the doctrine of the remnant and the faithfulness of God even in judgment.
(1) God’s Sovereignty & Justice: While most of Jerusalem faces wrath (vv.1–2, 12–17), God remains in full control—choosing to preserve a remnant, not because of merit, but mercy.
(2) God’s Covenant Faithfulness: Despite Israel’s rebellion (v.6), God keeps His covenant by preserving a lineage through which He will ultimately bring redemption.
(3) Foreshadowing of the Gospel: The “remnant” theme culminates in Jesus, the true Israelite and representative remnant (cf. Isa 11:1–2; Rom 9:27–33). In Christ, the faithful remnant becomes the universal Church, formed not by ethnicity but by grace through faith.
In a way, Ezekiel 5:3 prefigures the gospel paradox: though judgment falls, a small portion is saved, carried near and protected. Jesus is the one who binds His people close, covering them with His righteousness (cf. Luke 13:34; John 10:28). The preserved hairs symbolize those who are hidden in Christ, spared from ultimate judgment.
In Christ, the "remnant" becomes global: all who call on His name are gathered from every nation (Romans 11; Revelation 7:9). We see some encouragement in spite of Judgment: God always preserves a faithful remnant. In dark times, we’re reminded that God is never without a people (cf. 1 Kings 19:18).
Call to Cling to Christ: Only those “bound” to the true Redeemer are spared God’s wrath. Faith in Christ is our security. We are called to be that remnant—holy, distinct, preserved for God’s purpose—and to call others into His fold before judgment comes.
🙏 Prayer: "Lord, thank You for preserving a remnant even in judgment. Bind me close to You. May I be counted among those hidden under Your mercy, living faithfully and calling others to Your grace." You are holy and just. Help me take sin seriously and cling to Your grace in Christ. May I live as part of Your faithful remnant, proclaiming Your holiness with my life. In Jesus' name, Amen.
