What truly defines your life—the world’s approval or the cross of Christ? In Galatians 6, Paul reveals the marks of a transformed believer: a life that restores others, walks in humility, sows faithfully, and boasts only in Jesus. Let’s dive in to 4 things that we learn from this closing chapter.
The evidence of a new creation is a life shaped by the cross—restoring others with gentleness, walking in humility, sowing in faithfulness, and no longer belonging to the world.
Galatians 6:1–2 (ESV) “Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”
(1) Restore the Fallen with Gentleness
The Christian life is not lived in isolation. God has placed believers within the body of Christ, where we are called not only to receive encouragement but also to help restore one another. Paul addresses those who are “spiritual”—not those who think they are superior, but those who are walking by the Spirit (Galatians 5:16). Their responsibility when a fellow believer is caught in sin is not to condemn, shame, or distance themselves, but to restore.
The word restore carries the idea of repairing something that has been broken, like mending a net or setting a dislocated bone. Restoration requires truth, but it must be carried out with the right heart. Paul says restoration must happen: “in a spirit of gentleness.”
Gentleness does not mean weakness, compromise, or ignoring sin. Biblical gentleness is strength under control. A gentle believer can be firm about truth while still showing compassion toward the person who has fallen. The motivation for restoration is not pride:
“I cannot believe you fell into that sin.”
The right response is humility: “By God’s grace, I stand. Let me help you return to the Lord.” Paul adds: “Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted.”
The person helping restore another believer must remember his own weakness. We are not rescuers who stand above others; we are sinners saved by grace helping other sinners find restoration.
(2) Walk in Humility: Do Not Deceive Yourself
Galatians 6:3–5 (ESV) “For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. But let each one test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in himself alone and not in his neighbor. For each will have to bear his own load.”
One of the greatest dangers in the Christian life is spiritual pride. A believer may look at another person's failure and secretly think: “I would never do that,” “I am stronger spiritually, ” or “I am more mature than others.” But Paul warns: “He deceives himself.”
Pride creates a false view of ourselves. Apart from Christ, we have no reason to boast. Every good thing in us is the result of God's grace. Instead of comparing ourselves with others, Paul commands: “Let each one test his own work.” The Christian’s measure is not another person’s performance. The question is whether we are faithfully walking with Christ.
(3) Sow Faithfully and Care for God’s Household
Galatians 6:6, 9–10 (ESV) “Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches... And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.”
The Christian life is a life of sowing. What we sow today shapes what we reap tomorrow. Paul warns: “Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.” (Galatians 6:7) A person who continually sows into the flesh will reap corruption. A person who sows into the Spirit will reap eternal life (Galatians 6:8). Therefore, believers are called to invest in what matters eternally:
*Encourage the weary.
*Support those who teach God’s Word.
*Meet the needs of fellow believers.
*Do good whenever God provides opportunities.
The church is not merely an audience gathering on Sundays; it is a spiritual family where believers care for one another.
(4) Boast Only in the Cross: The Mark of a New Creation
Galatians 6:14–15 (ESV) “But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation.”
Because of the cross: “the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” This does not mean Christians no longer live physically in the world. Rather, the world no longer has the same authority, attraction, and control over us. Our desires, values, and identity have been changed. The believer can say: “I no longer belong to the old life. I belong to Christ.”
Reflection: Has the Cross Changed Your Relationship with the World?
*Is the world losing its grip on you?
*Do I still deeply desire the approval, pleasures, and values of this world?
*Are my greatest ambitions centred on Christ or self?
*Is there evidence that the Spirit is changing my desires?
To say, “the world has been crucified to me” does not mean temptation disappears. It means sin and worldly desires no longer define who we are. A transformed life becomes a testimony. Has your life become so shaped by Christ that those who knew your former way of living recognize that something has changed? Do your words, priorities, relationships, and choices communicate: “I belong to Jesus”? The goal is not merely to leave the world behind; it is to become a witness of a greater treasure found in Christ.
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for the power of Your cross that saves and transforms us. Teach us to restore others with humility and gentleness. Protect us from pride and help us examine our own hearts before judging others. Make us faithful sowers who love Your people and serve Your kingdom. May we boast only in Your cross, because through it we have become a new creation. Help us live in such a way that the world sees that we belong completely to You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
