What happens when the Messiah comes to His Temple? What about the King who comes on a donkey? What kind of person is this? Left revisit and re-reflect on this king who demands fruit from all of you. Are you following?

(1) The Humble King (Mark 11:1–11)

Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem marks the beginning of Passion Week. Instead of entering as a conquering warrior, He rides on a donkey, fulfilling the prophecy of Book of Zechariah 9:9. This act publicly reveals His identity as the Messiah but in a surprising way.

The crowds shout “Hosanna,” (meaning “save us, please” or “save us now”) expecting a political deliverer who would overthrow Rome. Yet Jesus presents Himself as a humble king who will reign through suffering and sacrifice. The triumph they celebrate will ultimately come through the cross.

Reflection: God’s victory often comes through humility rather than worldly power. Jesus shows us that true triumph is found through obedience and sacrificial love.

(2) The Warning of the Fig Tree (Mark 11:12–18)

Jesus curses a fig tree that bears no fruit, and soon after He cleanses the temple. These actions are prophetic signs pointing to God’s judgment on Israel’s spiritual emptiness.

The temple, meant to be a house of prayer, had become corrupted. The fruitless fig tree symbolises people who appear religious but lack genuine faith and obedience. Jesus’ actions remind us that God expects His people to bear spiritual fruit.

Reflection: Faith is not merely outward religion. God calls His people to lives that demonstrate genuine spiritual fruit—obedience, righteousness, and devotion.

(3) Faith-filled Prayer (Mark 11:19–26)

After the disciples notice the withered fig tree, Jesus teaches them about prayer and faith. He tells them that faith in God can move mountains. This statement emphasizes the power available to believers who trust God completely. However, Jesus also stresses an essential condition: forgiveness. A heart that holds bitterness cannot experience the fullness of God’s power.

Prayer, therefore, involves three key elements:

  • Faith in God’s power
  • Confidence that God hears
  • A forgiving heart toward others

Reflection: True prayer flows from faith and humility. When we trust God and forgive others, we experience His transforming power.

✅ Devotional Summary

Mark 11 reveals three important truths about Jesus and the life of faith:
(a) Jesus is the humble Messiah who triumphs through suffering.
(b) God expects spiritual fruit from His people.
(c) Faith-filled prayer and forgiveness open the way for God’s power.

🙏 Prayer

Heavenly Father. We praise You as the sovereign Lord who sent Your Son, Jesus Christ, the humble King. Thank You that He came not in worldly power but in humility, bringing salvation through His sacrifice.

Father, guard our hearts from empty religion. Help us not to be like the fruitless fig tree, appearing faithful outwardly but lacking true devotion. Plant us deeply in Your Word and nourish us by Your Spirit so that our lives will bear good fruit for Your glory.

Teach us to pray with faith, trusting in Your power and goodness. Remove doubt from our hearts and strengthen our confidence in You. As we come before You in prayer, help us also to forgive others, just as You have graciously forgiven us.

May our lives be a house of prayer, honoring Your holy presence and reflecting Your love to the world. We ask all this in the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
