READ http://www.esv.org/micah6

📖 Micah 6 opens like a courtroom scene. God summons the mountains to the stand: “Arise, plead your case before the mountains… the enduring foundations of the earth.” (Micah 6:1–2)

Why the mountains? Because mountains outlast kings, kingdoms, and people. They have “seen” generations of covenant failure. They testify to the unchanging faithfulness of God and the long pattern of human unfaithfulness. Creation itself becomes a witness.

“O My people, what have I done to you? How have I wearied you?” (6:3)

Israel acted as though obedience was a burden, devotion a chore, and God Himself a wearying taskmaster. But God reminds them of the truth.

(1) Remember the Exodus — God’s saving acts

“For I brought you up from the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of slavery.” (6:4)

God brings them back to the defining act of salvation: the Exodus. Before they ever obeyed, God rescued them. Before they served Him, He brought them out of bondage.

He also reminds them: “I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.” (6:4)

God gave them leaders — the spiritual giants of Israel. Moses the prophet, Aaron the priest, Miriam the worship leader. They were “big shots,” but only because God appointed them. God had consistently provided guidance, mercy, and leadership. Israel never had to walk blind.

Yet in spite of all of this, they drifted. They forgot. They became spiritually bored, treating God like He was the wearying one, rather than their own sin being the source of weariness.

(2) What God actually wants (Micah 6:8)

In response to God’s loving history, Israel asks, “What do You want from us? More sacrifices? More offerings?” (6:6–7). God answers with the simplicity and beauty of Micah 6:8:

“He has told you, O man, what is good;
and what does the LORD require of you
but to do justice,
and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God?”

Here is the heart of true devotion: (a) ➤ Do justice: Live out God’s righteousness in the way you treat others.  (b) ➤ Love kindness (hesed): “Hesed” means covenant loyalty, steadfast love. (c) ➤ Walk humbly with your God: Not pride, not self-promotion, not religious performance — but humble, daily dependence on the Lord. Not just doing things for God, but walking with God.
(3) The certainty of judgment for the wicked (Micah 6:9–16)
The second half of Micah 6 warns that God’s patience does not cancel God’s holiness.
Deceitful scales, injustice, violence, and unrepentant sin will lead to destruction.

For those who reject God’s ways, there is real judgment. But for those who return to Him, mercy is always available — the same mercy shown in the Exodus.

🔥 Application for Today

(1) Remember God’s saving acts
Just as Israel had to look back to the Exodus, we look back to the Cross. God rescued us first — obedience flows from redemption.

(2) Stop treating God as a burden
Spiritual boredom is often a symptom not of God’s failure, but of hearts drifting from Him.
Returning begins with remembering His grace.

(3) Live Micah 6:8 today: Do justice where you are. Love mercy because God has been merciful to you. Walk humbly with God — not ahead, not behind.

(4) Trust that God judges evil: We don’t have to avenge ourselves. God sees. God knows. God will deal with the wicked in His time.

🙏 Closing Prayer
Lord, forgive us when our hearts grow dull and we treat You as a burden. Remind us of Your saving acts, of the grace You’ve poured out from the Exodus to the Cross. Teach us to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with You. Keep us from the path of the wicked. Anchor our hearts in Your faithfulness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
