What does it mean to truly believe in Jesus? In this passage from the Gospel of John, a desperate father comes to Jesus with a dying son—and receives only a promise: “Your son will live.” With no proof and no miracle yet seen, the man chooses to trust Jesus’ word. This powerful sign reminds us why John wrote his Gospel: that we may believe Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing we may have life in His name. Today we’ll discover what it means to have faith before the miracle.
In the Gospel of John, miracles are never merely displays of power—they are signs pointing to who Jesus truly is. The apostle makes this clear near the end of the book:
“These are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:30–31).
The healing of the official’s son in John 4:43–54 beautifully illustrates that purpose.
A desperate father traveled from Capernaum to Cana because his son was dying. He pleaded with Jesus to come and heal the boy. But instead of going with him, Jesus simply said, “Go; your son will live.” The moment of decision came immediately: would the man demand proof, or would he trust the word of Jesus?
Scripture tells us something remarkable—“The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way.” Before seeing the miracle, before receiving confirmation, he trusted Christ’s promise. Later his servants confirmed that the fever left his son at the exact hour Jesus spoke. What began as hope in a miracle grew into full faith: he himself believed, and all his household.
This story is called the second sign Jesus performed in Galilee. Like the other signs in the Gospel of John, it was written not just to tell us what Jesus did, but to show us who He is—the Christ, the Son of God, whose word carries life-giving authority.
Many people want to see before they believe. But this passage reminds us that true faith trusts Jesus’ word even before the evidence appears. His promises are trustworthy because of who He is.
The same call echoes to us today: believe His word, trust His identity, and receive life in His name.
🙏 Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for revealing Your Son through the signs recorded in Scripture. Help us to trust the word of Jesus even when we cannot yet see the outcome. Strengthen our faith so that we may truly believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and find life in His name. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
