Ephesians 2:11–13 [11] Therefore remember that at one time you Gentiles in the flesh, called “the uncircumcision” by what is called the circumcision, which is made in the flesh by hands—[12] remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. [13] But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. (ESV)
Remembering the past might help the Ephesians and other Gentile believers today to be thankful and glorify God now. Firstly, their past was without Christ (2:12). Indeed, the Gentiles of the pagan world were without the covenants given to Israel and their forefathers. The Gentiles were waddled in sin and groping in the dark even though they did try to set up some form of worship rites for whatever deities their mind has made up.
Secondly, their past was without nationhood (2:12). There was no form of nationhood, no commonwealth to join and waddled in multiple identity crises.
Thirdly, their past was not friends with Christ (2:12). Even though the number of people grew, they felt like "strangers" (2:12) in their relationship with God. At that time, God revealed Himself to the Jews only, not to the Gentiles at large. Friendship with the LORD felt like a distant concept. The Jews of Paul's time did not function as God's revelation and demonstration of who God is to the Gentiles, the Ephesians at all. Fourth, their past was "hopeless." Fifth, their past was "godless" (2:12).
But now God has reversed all these "...lessness":
Ephesians 2:13–18 [13] But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. [14] For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility [15] by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, [16] and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility. [17] And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near. [18] For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. (ESV)
The Christless have been transformed to be "in Christ" (2:13). The stateless have become citizens (2:19). The distant strangers have been brought near because the dividing wall has been abolished—the Jews and Gentiles have been made into one people due to the killing of hostility between them (2:16). The hopeless have become members of the household of God (2:19). The godless ones are now standing on the foundation and tradition of the apostles and prophets (2:20). This foundation is secure because Christ is the "cornerstone" (2:20).
Ephesians 2:21–22 [21] in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. [22] In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit. (ESV)
The last two verses capped Paul's exhortation to the Ephesians to remember the past, such that thankfulness and praise might well up in your hearts, resulting in much praise and better worship of this God. Won't you do that at the next worship service this weekend?
