Did you know that one of the “greatest” missionary projects in the New Testament wasn't preaching—but taking an offering? In 1 Corinthians 16, Paul shows us that generosity, integrity, and encouraging one another are all essential marks of a healthy church. Let's discover why this often-overlooked chapter is packed with timeless lessons for every believer.

In 1 Corinthians 16, Paul reveals how giving, faithful service, and encouraging others display the power of the gospel." Don't skip 1 Corinthians 16. It may look like Paul's closing remarks, but it's actually a blueprint for Christian generosity, integrity, and gospel partnership.

"Stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love." (1 Corinthians 16:13–14)

We see Paul's pastoral heart and the practical outworking of the gospel.

(1) The Jerusalem Collection "for the saints" (vv. 1–4)

The collection for the poor believers in Jerusalem represents a high point of Paul's missionary vision and practical theology. The Gentile churches were not merely sending financial aid; they were expressing their unity with their Jewish brothers and sisters in Christ. Their generosity demonstrated that the gospel had made them one family.

Taken together, these passages trace the entire story. The concern begins with Paul's commitment in Galatians, is organized in 1 Corinthians, encouraged in 2 Corinthians, completed in Romans, and likely delivered in Acts.

The collection was therefore both humanitarian and theological. It relieved genuine poverty while visibly expressing the reconciliation of Jewish and Gentile believers into one body through Christ.

Application:

Christian generosity is never merely financial. It is an expression of gospel unity, love, and partnership in God's family.

(2) Integrity in Handling God's Money (vv. 2–4)

Paul gives careful instructions regarding the collection. The offering is to be gathered regularly and systematically, approved representatives are to carry it, and Paul himself refuses to act independently.

This demonstrates Paul's commitment to financial integrity, accountability, and transparency. Even an apostle wanted the churches to have complete confidence that their gifts were being handled honorably.

Application:

Faithful Christian stewardship requires honesty, accountability, and wise administration. The way God's people handle money should strengthen, not weaken, the church's witness.

(3) Refreshing Fellow Workers (vv. 10–18)

Paul urges the Corinthians to receive Timothy and put him at ease and not to despise him. He also commends Stephanas, Fortunatus, and Achaicus because they "refreshed my spirit as well as yours."

Paul understood that ministry flourishes where believers encourage, honour, and strengthen one another. Faithful servants need more than criticism—they need welcome, appreciation, prayer, and refreshment.

Application: One mark of spiritual maturity is becoming someone who refreshes the hearts of others. Every church should be a place where gospel workers are encouraged and fellow believers leave strengthened.

(4) Final Exhortation (vv. 13–24)

Paul closes with five timeless commands:

• Be watchful.
• Stand firm in the faith.
• Be courageous.
• Be strong.
• Let everything you do be done in love.

Christian courage must always be joined with Christian love. Truth without love becomes harsh; love without truth becomes weak. The mature disciple holds both together.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for making us one family through Jesus Christ. Teach us to give generously, serve with integrity, encourage Your servants, and refresh the hearts of fellow believers. Help us to stand firm in the faith, remain courageous in the gospel, and let everything we do be governed by love. May our lives display the unity and grace of Christ to the world. In Jesus’ name. (3) 鼓励同工（10–18节）

保罗敦促哥林多信徒好好地接待提摩太，“使他在你们那里不会惧怕”，不要轻视他。他还称赞了司提反、福图纳图斯和亚该古，因为他们“使我和你们的心都得着畅快”。

保罗深知，当信徒彼此鼓励、尊重和坚固时，事工才会兴旺。忠心的仆人需要的不仅仅是批评——他们更需要欢迎、欣赏、祷告和心灵的慰藉。

应用：属灵成熟的标志之一，就是成为能使他人心灵得着鼓励的人。每间教会都应当成为一个地方，在那里，福音工人得到鼓励，信徒们离开时也得着了力量。

(4) 最后的劝勉（第13–24节）

保罗以五条永恒的命令作结：

• 要警醒。
• 要坚守信仰。
• 要勇敢。
• 要刚强。
• 凡事都要凭爱心而行。

基督徒的勇气必须始终与基督徒的爱心相结合。没有爱心的真理会变得严苛；没有真理的爱心会变得软弱。成熟的门徒将二者结合在一起。
