One woman poured out a year's wages to worship Jesus. One disciple sold Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. The difference wasn't money—it was the heart. John 12 reveals three powerful lessons every believer needs to hear.

John 12 opens with two very different responses to Jesus. One response is wholehearted worship; the other is growing hostility. The passage reminds believers that what fills the heart will eventually be revealed in one's actions.

(1) Loving Jesus involves action, not merely words (John 12:1–8)

Mary of Bethany expressed her love for Jesus not through a speech, but through sacrificial worship. She anointed Jesus' feet with expensive perfume, wiped His feet with her hair, and "the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume" (v. 3).

The perfume represented an enormous sacrifice—worth about three hundred denarii, approximately a year's wages. Yet Mary did not calculate the cost because she recognized the surpassing worth of Christ. Her actions reflected a heart that treasured Jesus above earthly possessions.

Jesus Himself commended her act because it prepared Him for His burial. Mary's devotion teaches that genuine faith is demonstrated in costly obedience, generous worship, and humble service. Love for Christ is not measured primarily by what we say, but by what we gladly give to Him.

Reflection: Does my love for Jesus move beyond words into concrete acts of worship, service, generosity, and obedience? How much money are you willing to expend for your ministry and demonstrate love for Jesus?

(2) Public words can conceal opposite motives (John 12:9–11)

Judas sounded compassionate: "Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?" (v. 5) His words appeared righteous, but John immediately exposes his true motive: "He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief..." (v. 6).

Likewise, the chief priests responded to the raising of Lazarus in a shocking way. Instead of believing in Jesus, they planned to kill both Jesus and Lazarus because many Jews were believing in Christ through Lazarus' testimony (vv. 10–11).

Both Judas and the religious leaders illustrate that outwardly respectable language can mask hearts opposed to God. God sees beyond appearances into the true intentions of the heart.

Reflection: Am I more concerned with appearing spiritual before others, or with sincerely honouring Christ before God?

(3) Beware of excusing "small" deviations from God's truth

Sin rarely reaches its full expression in a single step. It often begins with seemingly minor compromises that gradually harden the heart.

Judas first objected to Mary's offering under the appearance of financial responsibility. Yet John reveals that his complaint reflected a deeper problem—his love of money. Eventually, the man who criticized a gift worth three hundred denarii betrayed the Son of God for thirty pieces of silver.

Similarly, the chief priests witnessed one of Jesus' greatest signs: the raising of Lazarus from the dead. Rather than recognizing Jesus as "the resurrection and the life" (John 11:25), they sought to destroy the very evidence of His power by plotting Lazarus' death. Persistent unbelief had distorted their spiritual judgment.

These examples warn believers not to rationalize seemingly insignificant compromises. A heart that continually suppresses God's truth can become increasingly resistant to repentance.

Reflection: Is there any attitude, habit, or compromise that I have been excusing instead of bringing before the Lord in repentance?

Gospel Application

This passage ultimately points us to the surpassing worth of Jesus Christ.

Mary recognized His incomparable value and poured out her treasure in worship. Judas valued money more than the Saviour. The chief priests valued their authority more than the truth. Each person's response revealed what they truly loved.

The gospel calls believers to treasure Christ above every earthly possession, ambition, or reputation. Because Jesus willingly gave Himself for sinners through His death and resurrection, our response is not reluctant duty but joyful, sacrificial worship.

May our lives be like Mary's—filled with humble devotion, wholehearted obedience, and love that is seen in action rather than words alone.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, You are worthy of our greatest love and highest devotion. Guard our hearts from hypocrisy, greed, and the subtle compromises that draw us away from You. Give us Mary's heart to worship You sacrificially, courage to follow You faithfully, and grace to treasure You above all earthly things. May our lives point others to the beauty and glory of Christ. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
