Joel 3 points to God's justice, the hope for believers, and the coming kingdom of Christ.

Scripture Focus: Joel 3:16 (ESV) –
"The Lord roars from Zion, and utters his voice from Jerusalem, and the heavens and the earth quake. But the Lord is a refuge to his people, a stronghold to the people of Israel."

Devotional Thought:
Joel 3 paints a powerful picture of the Day of the Lord — a day of reckoning and judgment for the nations, but also a day of refuge and restoration for God’s people. In this chapter, God gathers the nations in the Valley of Jehoshaphat (literally "Yahweh judges") to hold them accountable for how they treated His people.

In a world where evil often seems unchecked, Joel 3 reminds us that God is not silent. There is a day coming when He will judge every injustice, avenge every wrong, and establish His kingdom. For the unbeliever, this is a call to repent before it's too late. For the believer, this is a call to stand firm in hope.

Notice the contrast: the nations tremble, but God’s people find refuge. This is the promise of the Gospel — that in Christ, we are not appointed for wrath but for salvation (1 Thess. 5:9). Jesus took the judgment we deserved so that when God "roars from Zion," we don’t need to fear — we can rest in Him.

The Gospel in Joel 3:

Though Joel speaks of judgment, the chapter ends with a glorious vision of restoration (Joel 3:18–21). A fountain flows from the house of the Lord — imagery later picked up by Jesus in John 7:38: "Whoever believes in me…out of his heart will flow rivers of living water."

Joel's prophecy points ahead to the final victory of Christ. As evangelicals, we proclaim not only that Christ came to save sinners but that He will come again to judge and to reign. This truth should fuel both our urgency in evangelism and our confidence in suffering.

Reflection Questions:

(1) How does the reality of God's coming judgment shape the way you live today?

(2) In what ways are you tempted to seek refuge in the world instead of in Christ?

(3) Are you prepared to meet the Lord? Have you trusted in Jesus for salvation?

(4) Who in your life needs to hear about the refuge available in Christ?

Prayer:
Lord, thank You that You are a righteous judge and a merciful Saviour. Help me to live with a sense of urgency and hope, knowing that You will return to make all things right. Thank You that in Jesus, I have a refuge from judgment and a promise of eternal life. Empower me to share this good news boldly. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
