Scripture Focus for today: “A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If then I am a father, where is my honor?” (Malachi 1:6a, ESV)
Reflection
In Malachi 1, God confronts His people with a serious problem: their words say one thing, but their actions say another. They claim to honour the LORD, yet they offer Him blind, lame, and sick sacrifices—things they would never dare present to a human governor (1:8).
God is not questioning whether they believe in Him. He is questioning whether they honour Him.
The heart of the issue is not ritual but reverence. The people still brought offerings, still showed up at the altar, still used religious language. But their obedience had become careless, half-hearted, and convenient. They gave God what cost them little. Malachi exposes a timeless truth:
God is not honored by words alone, but by actions that match our confession.
(1) Saying vs. Doing
The people said, “How have we despised your name?” (v.6).
God answered, “By offering polluted food upon my altar.”
They didn’t feel disrespectful—but their actions revealed the truth. This challenges us today:
(a) Do we say God is important, yet give Him leftover time?
(b) Do we say He is worthy, yet obey only when it’s easy?
(c) Do we speak of loving God, yet hold back our best?
Jesus later echoed this same warning: “This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.” (Matthew 15:8)
(2) Honoring God Today
Honoring the LORD means: Giving Him our best, not our leftovers. Obeying fully, not selectively. Living consistently, not performatively.
God is a great King (Malachi 1:14). He deserves worship that flows from sincere faith and shows up in daily obedience—how we speak, serve, forgive, work, and worship.
Prayer
Father God, forgive me for the times I have said the right things but lived with lesser obedience. You are worthy of my best, not what is convenient. Teach me to honor You not only with my words, but with my actions. May my life reflect the greatness of Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Closing Thought
Do not say one thing and give God another. True worship honours the LORD with actions that match our confession.
