“The Lord roars from Zion and utters his voice from Jerusalem; the pastures of the shepherds mourn, and the top of Carmel withers.”
📖 Introduction to Amos 1:
Set in the 8th Century B.C., the book of Amos begins with a surprising twist: a humble shepherd from the southern kingdom of Judah is called by God to prophesy judgment—not first against Israel or Judah, but against the surrounding nations. In Amos 1, God pronounces His judgment on Damascus, Gaza, Tyre, Edom, and Ammon for their violence, cruelty, and injustice. These pagan nations likely thought they were beyond God’s concern, but Amos makes it clear: God sees every sin, and He holds every nation accountable.
This sets the tone for the rest of the book—Amos will eventually turn his focus toward God’s own people, but first, he reminds everyone that the Lord is the righteous Judge of all the earth.
🔥 Devotional Thought:
We often think of judgment as something reserved for the "really bad" people—terrorists, dictators, or corrupt governments. But Amos 1 teaches that God’s justice is universal. He holds even powerful nations accountable for what they do to the weak, the vulnerable, and the innocent.
“The Lord roars from Zion…” — this isn't a gentle whisper. It’s a lion’s roar, declaring that the God of Israel is also the God of the whole world. His justice crosses borders, and His voice cannot be ignored.
As evangelicals, we must proclaim both the holiness of God and the hope of the Gospel. Sin—whether personal or national—demands justice. And yet, because of Jesus, justice and mercy meet at the cross. The same God who "roars from Zion" also sent His Son to die for the sins of the world.
If we ignore sin, we cheapen the Gospel. But if we proclaim judgment without hope, we distort it. Amos 1 calls us to live with a healthy fear of God, a deep awareness of His justice, and a bold commitment to share the good news that Christ bore the judgment we deserve.

(2) Where in your life might you be ignoring "small sins" that God sees and cares about?
(3) Are you burdened by the injustices in the world? How can you reflect God’s heart in action?
(4) How can the reality of judgment fuel your urgency in sharing the Gospel?
🛐 Prayer:
Lord, You are the righteous Judge of all the earth. Help me to live in reverent fear of You, not in terror, but in awe of Your holiness and mercy. Thank You that through Jesus, Your justice was satisfied and Your mercy poured out. Give me courage to speak truth in a dark world and compassion to point people to the only refuge—Christ. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

在主前大概8世纪，阿摩司书开篇便出人意料：一位来自南国犹大的卑微牧人蒙神呼召，预言的审判对象并非以色列或犹大，而是周边列国。在阿摩司书1章中，神因大马士革、迦萨、推罗、以东和亚扪的暴力、残暴与不义，宣告了对这些国家的审判。这些外邦列国或许自以为超乎神的关注，但阿摩司宣告：神洞察一切罪孽，必使万国各归其责。
此处奠定了全书基调——阿摩司最终将矛头指向神的子民，但首先提醒世人：耶和华乃全地公义的审判者。
🔥 灵修默想：
我们常以为审判只针对“真正邪恶”之人——恐怖分子、独裁者或腐败政权。但《阿摩司书》第一章揭示：神的公义普世无疆。祂甚至要强盛之国为欺压弱者、伤害无辜者之行负责。
“耶和华从锡安吼叫...”——这绝非轻柔耳语，而是雄狮的怒吼，宣告以色列的神亦是普世之神。祂的公义跨越疆界，祂的声音不容忽视。
作为福音派信徒，我们必须同时宣告神的圣洁与福音的盼望。罪——无论是个人之罪还是国之罪——都要求公义。然而，因着耶稣，公义与怜悯在十字架上相遇。那位“从锡安吼叫”的神，也差遣祂的儿子为世人的罪而死。
若我们忽视罪恶，便贬低了福音的价值；但若只宣告审判而无盼望，则扭曲了福音真义。阿摩司书第一章呼召我们：怀着对神的敬畏而活，深刻体认祂的公义，并勇敢传扬基督已为我们承受应得审判的佳音。

(2) 在你生命中哪些“微小罪行”正被你忽视，而神却看顾并关注？
(3) 你是否因世间不公而心怀重担？如何在行动中彰显神的心意？
(4) 审判的现实如何激发你传扬福音的紧迫感？
🛐 祷告：
主啊，祢是全地公义的审判者。求祢助我存敬畏之心而活，不是恐惧，而是对祢圣洁与怜悯的敬畏。感谢祢借着耶稣使公义得以成就，怜悯倾注人间。求赐我勇气在黑暗世界中传讲真理，赐我怜悯之心引导人归向唯一的避难所——基督。奉耶稣的名祷告，阿们。
