Who are we led by? Who mocks at us? Proverbs 20:1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise. (ESV)
Indeed, the beverage mocks a man. How do wines and other C+H+O combinations do that?
(1) Firstly by dulling the senses–with senses dulled, the receptors of information from the outside world has weakened or with data-stream dropped , like a problematic wifi link. Effective responses to the real world, if any, become mistaken.
(2) Secondly, with responses and behaviour compromised (e.g. not being aware of what he is wearing or not wearing), this makes him appear foolish to others.
(3) Thirdly, when that person realises what he has done subsequently, he labels himself a fool and unwise!
During the above cycle(s) of (1), (2) & (3), he would have neglected himself by not having proper rest, self-care and leaving tasks which others expected him to do, undone. There are relational and productivity consequences for this. Meanwhile, his peers would have moved ahead with proper plowing and harvesting:
Proverbs 20:4 The sluggard does not plow in the autumn; he will seek at harvest and have nothing. (ESV)
On the other hand, the lady with wisdom "laughs at the time to come" (Proverbs 31:25). Which LOL are we? Proverbs 31:25 Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. (ESV)
