READ http://www.esv.org/eze10
With Ezekiel 10, we focus on verses 4 and 18, which speak of the glory of the Lord departing the temple.
🔥 Scripture Focus:
Ezekiel 10:4 “And the glory of the Lord went up from the cherub to the threshold of the house, and the house was filled with the cloud, and the court was filled with the brightness of the glory of the Lord.”
Ezekiel 10:18 “Then the glory of the LORD went out from the threshold of the house, and stood over the cherubim.” (ESV)
💡 Devotional Thought:
In Ezekiel 10, we are given a stunning and tragic vision: the slow departure of God’s glory from His temple. Verse 4 tells us that the glory of the Lord moved from the cherubim to the threshold, as if pausing before leaving entirely. The cloud and brightness signify God's holy presence, but they also serve as a warning: God is not pleased.
By verse 18, we see the heartbreaking moment—His glory leaves the threshold and rises above the cherubim, ready to depart. This isn’t just a physical movement; it’s a spiritual indictment against the people of Judah who had abandoned God for idols, injustice, and self-reliance.
🔍 What This Teaches Us:
(1) God’s Presence Is Not to Be Taken Lightly.
The temple was the center of worship, yet sin had filled its courts. The glory that once dwelled in their midst began to move away. When we tolerate sin, God's felt presence may retreat—not because He abandons us without cause, but because He is holy.
(2) God Warns Before He Withdraws.
Note that God doesn’t leave suddenly. The glory moves gradually, from inside to the threshold, then out. This is mercy—a chance to repent. Even in judgment, God is patient.
(3) Brightness and Cloud: His Presence Is Awesome.
The cloud and brightness remind us of Sinai, of the Tabernacle—places where God dwelled among His people. When He shows up, everything changes. But if He departs, no religious form or ritual can substitute for His real presence.
⛹🏻♂️ Devotional Challenge: Ask yourself:
(1) Have I become used to the motions of worship without the reality of God’s presence?
(2) Is there anything in my life that might be causing God’s glory to move to the threshold, ready to leave?
(3) Am I more concerned with appearing religious than actually being in relationship with God?
The departure of God’s glory from the temple is a warning, but also a call to renewed devotion, repentance, and reverence. God wants to dwell with His people—but only where He is honoured.
🙏 Prayer:
Lord, I do not want Your glory to depart from my life. Search me and know me. Remove anything in me that grieves You. I welcome Your presence. Fill the house of my heart once again with Your brightness and glory. Let me never grow cold or complacent. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
