QT 30/10/2025 Thu. Amos 2 “When God’s People Turn Away”
READ http://www.esv.org/Amos2
Scripture Focus: Amos 2:4–7 (ESV)
“Because they have rejected the law of the Lord, and have not kept his statutes, but their lies have led them astray… because they sell the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals—those who trample the head of the poor into the dust of the earth and turn aside the way of the afflicted; a man and his father go in to the same girl, so that my holy name is profaned…”
📖 Devotional Thought:
In Amos 1, God’s judgment was directed at the surrounding nations for their violence and cruelty. But in Amos 2, the focus shifts dramatically — first to Judah (v.4–5), then to Israel (v.6–8). What shocks us is not that pagan nations are judged, but that God’s own people are under condemnation. Why? Because they had rejected God’s Word and defiled His name with hypocrisy, injustice, and immorality.
They had the truth, yet chose lies. They had God’s law, yet sold out the righteous for silver and treated the poor as disposable—even selling the needy for “a pair of sandals.” Sexual immorality ran so deep that fathers and sons shared the same woman, and God says: “so that my holy name is profaned.”
This is more than just rebellion—it’s a complete breakdown of love for God and love for neighbor. The people thought they were secure because they were God’s chosen, but their actions denied their identity. This passage is a clear reminder: God cares about how we treat people, especially the vulnerable.
✝️ The Gospel Connection:
Amos 2 crushes religious pride. We are not saved because we’re better than others. We’ve all rejected God's law. We’ve all believed lies. We’ve all sinned against others and profaned God’s name in one way or another. If left to ourselves, we all deserve God’s judgment.
But here’s the Good News: Jesus bore the weight of our sin and shame. He was sold—not for silver, but for 30 pieces of silver. He was the Righteous One, condemned in the place of the unrighteous. He cared for the poor, upheld the broken, and perfectly honored the Father’s holy name.
By His death and resurrection, Jesus offers forgiveness for every sin—even the most shameful—and new hearts to live in obedience and love. What the people in Amos rejected, Christ fulfilled.
🧠 Reflection Questions:
(1) In what areas have I rejected God’s Word or chosen to believe lies instead?
(2) How do I treat the poor, the vulnerable, and those without power?
(3) Are there places in my life where I’m profaning God’s name rather than honoring it?
(4) How does the Gospel both convict me and give me hope today?
🙏 Prayer:
Father, I confess that I too have turned aside from Your truth and believed lies. I have often pursued comfort and selfish gain instead of justice and mercy. Forgive me. Cleanse me. Restore a right heart within me through Jesus. Let Your holy name be honored in my life—in my thoughts, my relationships, and how I treat others. Empower me by Your Spirit to walk in humility and truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
