Some would call it the crunch day, the day when everything would be revealed, hidden comments, secret agenda, but also the constant and committed quiet devotion to God. In Mark 15, we see the day everything was revealed, including what’s hidden inside you. Let’s unpack this.
Mark 15 is one of the most sobering chapters in Scripture. The trial, suffering, and death of Jesus reveal and expose the hearts of many people. In this chapter, the cross becomes a place of revelation—where motives, beliefs, and God’s redemptive plan are unveiled.
(1) The Leaders Reveal Their Rejection of God’s Messiah (Mark 15:1–5)
In the early morning, the chief priests, elders, and scribes unite in their determination to eliminate Jesus. Their coordinated effort reveals something tragic: religious authority does not guarantee spiritual discernment. Though they were supposed to lead people toward God, they instead rejected the One sent by God.
Their silence before Jesus’ truth exposes hardened hearts.
(2) The Crowd Reveals Their Distorted Values (Mark 15:6–15)
When Pilate offers the crowd a choice, they choose Barabbas, a known criminal, instead of Jesus. This shocking exchange reveals their priorities. Justice is ignored. Truth is rejected. The innocent is condemned while the guilty walks free.
Yet even in this injustice we see a deeper gospel picture: the guilty goes free while the innocent (Jesus Christ) takes his place.
(3) The Soldiers Reveal Human Cruelty and Contempt (Mark 15:16–20)
The Roman soldiers mock Jesus with a purple robe, a crown of thorns, and false homage. Their actions reveal profound disrespect for Jesus’ dignity and kingship.
Ironically, their mockery unintentionally proclaims the truth—Jesus truly is the King, though not the kind they expect.
(4) Jesus Reveals His Willing Obedience (Mark 15:23)
“And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.”
This drink likely had numbing properties to dull pain. Jesus refuses it. This reveals His intention to fully and consciously endure the suffering required to accomplish God’s will. He does not escape the pain; He embraces the mission.
(5) The Torn Curtain Reveals Open Access to God (Mark 15:38)
“And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.”
The temple curtain separated people from the Most Holy Place—the symbolic presence of God. Its tearing from top to bottom shows that God Himself removes the barrier.
Through Jesus’ death, access to God is now open to those who come to Him.
(6) The Centurion Reveals the Truth (Mark 15:39)
Ironically, the clearest confession comes from an unlikely witness—a Roman centurion overseeing the execution.
“Truly this man was the Son of God!”
While religious leaders rejected Him, a Gentile executioner recognises the truth. The cross reveals Jesus’ identity most clearly.
(7) Joseph of Arimathea Reveals Courageous Faith (Mark 15:43)
Joseph “took courage” and asked Pilate for Jesus’ body.
At a time when it appeared that Jesus’ story had ended, Joseph’s actions reveal faith, hope, and loyalty. True discipleship often shows itself when following Jesus becomes costly.
(8) The Women Reveal True Ministry (Mark 15:40–41)
“When he was in Galilee, they followed him and ministered to him…”
While many disciples fled, these women remained. Their quiet faithfulness reveals something important: true co-workers in God’s kingdom are those who faithfully serve and stay near to Jesus. Ministry often happens not in the spotlight, but in steadfast devotion.
(9) The Death of Jesus Reveals the Seriousness of Sin
From the beginning, God declared the consequence of sin: “For in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” —Genesis 2:17
The cross shows that sin is not trivial—it demands death. But it also reveals the depth of God’s love: Jesus bears the penalty for humanity’s sin. Yet the story is not finished. The resurrection will soon reveal the justice, mercy, and power of God in full.
Reflection
Mark 15 does not only reveal who Jesus is. It also reveals who we are. If we were present in that scene, which role might we resemble?
- The religious leaders, protecting our status rather than seeking truth?
- The crowd, following popular opinion instead of justice?
- The soldiers, indifferent to the suffering of Christ?
- The centurion, finally recognising who Jesus truly is?
- The women, faithfully serving Him?
- Or Joseph, courageously identifying with Him when it costs something?
The cross reveals the heart of humanity—but it also reveals the grace of God. And the most important question remains: What does your response to Jesus reveal about you? What role are you playing in the story of your spiritual community today?
