Every day, we invest in outcomes—education for success, vitamins for health, money for a better future. But what if there’s one outcome that matters more than them all? In 2 Thessalonians 1, Paul reveals what God is looking for—and the final result that lasts forever.

This passage points us to a powerful contrast: the biggest difference in outcomes is not simply what we do in this life, but whether our lives are found worthy of God’s calling and whether Christ is glorified in us.

(1) God is looking for evidence to determine the final outcome

Paul gives thanks because the Thessalonians’ faith and love were producing visible evidence (2 Thessalonians 1:3–4). Their perseverance under persecution demonstrated that their faith was genuine.

God sees beyond outward appearances. The final outcome will reveal what our lives truly belong to. This gives us a searching question: What evidence is my life producing?

Not merely:

• How much do I know?
• How successful am I?
• How comfortable is my life?

But:

• Is there growing faith?
• Is there love for others?
• Is there perseverance when circumstances are difficult?
• Are my works flowing from faith?

Our present choices have eternal significance.

(2) God will repay with affliction those who oppose Him

Paul reminds the believers that God is just. Those who reject God and refuse to obey the gospel will ultimately face His judgment (2 Thessalonians 1:6–10). This is sobering because God's judgment is not arbitrary. He sees how people respond to Him.

At the same time, this truth gives comfort to suffering believers. Paul tells the Thessalonians that God will set things right. They do not need to take revenge or despair when they are mistreated. There is therefore a great difference between living as though this present life is the final outcome and living with eternity in view.

(3) God will be glorified among those who believed

The wonderful contrast is found in verses 10–12. Christ will come and be glorified among His people, and Paul prays that the Thessalonians may live in such a way that the name of Jesus is glorified in them.

Notice Paul's prayer:  “that our God may make you worthy of his calling” and “may fulfill every resolve for good and every work of faith by his power”.

The goal is not simply that Christians become successful or respectable. The ultimate outcome is that Jesus is glorified. That gives meaning to everything we do. Our education, work, family responsibilities, giving, service, relationships, and decisions can all become expressions of faith when they are directed toward Christ's glory.

The biggest difference

The world often measures outcomes by things such as wealth, health, achievement, influence, and status. But 2 Thessalonians 1 presents a much bigger measure:

What will be the eternal outcome of my life, and will Christ be glorified in me? Verse 12 brings it together: “so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him”.

The Christian life is therefore not ultimately about making our name great. It is about making Jesus' name great. And we cannot accomplish this merely through our own strength. Paul says God fulfills every good resolve and every work of faith “by his power.”

Reflection

Perhaps we can ask ourselves three questions today:
*What evidence of faith can be seen in my life?
*Am I living with God's eternal judgment and justice in view?
*In what I am doing today, is the name of Jesus being glorified?

The biggest difference in outcomes is the difference between a life lived merely for temporary results and a life lived for eternal glory.

Prayer

Lord, make us worthy of Your calling. Strengthen our faith, produce in us the evidence of a life that belongs to You, and help us persevere when we face difficulties. May every good resolve and every work of faith be accomplished by Your power. Above all, may the name of our Lord Jesus be glorified in us, today and for eternity. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

• 我的行为是否源于信心？

我们当下的选择具有永恒的意义。

(2) 神必以患难报应那些抵挡祂的人

保罗提醒信徒，神是公义的。那些拒绝神、不肯顺服福音的人，最终必面临祂的审判（帖撒罗尼迦后书1：6–10）。这一点发人深省，因为神的审判并非武断。祂看清了人们如何回应祂。

与此同时，这一真理也给受苦的信徒带来了安慰。保罗告诉帖撒罗尼迦人，神必会使万事归正。当他们遭受不公对待时，无需报复，也无需绝望。因此，将现世生活视为最终归宿的生活方式，与怀着永恒视野而活的生活方式之间，存在着巨大的差异。

我生命的永恒结局将会如何？基督是否会在我的生命中得着荣耀？第12节将这一点概括出来：“在你们身上得着荣耀，你们也在他身上得着荣耀”。

因此，基督徒生命的终极目标并非为了使自己的名声显赫，而是为了使耶稣的名得荣耀。而我们仅凭自己的力量是无法实现这一点的。保罗说，神“凭着他的大能”，成就我们一切美好的心志和一切出于信心的行为。

反思

今天，或许我们可以问自己三个问题：
*我的生命中能显出哪些信心的证据？
*我是否时刻将神的永恒审判与公义铭记于心？
*在我今天所做的事上，耶稣的名是否得着了荣耀？

结果最大的区别，在于仅仅为暂时的成果而活，与为永恒的荣耀而活之间的差异。

What if you knew Jesus could return at any moment—but you had no idea when? Would you panic, or would you live differently? In 1 Thessalonians 5, Paul shows us how to wait: stay awake, stay faithful, and keep building others up. Let’s discover what that looks like today!”

There is an important tension in 1 Thessalonians 5: waiting for the Lord’s return is not passive waiting. Paul connects readiness for the Day of the Lord with faithful Christian living in the present.

(1) Readiness is expressed through faith, love, and hope

In vv. 1–11, Paul does not tell believers to calculate when the Day of the Lord will come. Instead, he tells them to live as children of light. The “breastplate of faith and love” and the “helmet of the hope of salvation” describe a life already oriented toward Christ.

So the question is not merely, “When will He come?” but, “How should I live while I wait?”

Paul's answer is clear: remain spiritually awake, sober, faithful, and encouraging toward others.

(2) Christian waiting involves active service

In vv. 14–15 Paul moves from the general call to readiness to very practical relationships within the church:

• admonish the idle,
• encourage the fainthearted,
• help the weak,
• be patient with everyone,
• do not repay evil for evil,
• pursue what is good.

This means that waiting for Christ is not an excuse for inactivity. The anticipation of His coming should make believers more attentive to the needs of those around them.

(3) Verses 12–13 give a particularly important correction

1 Thessalonians 5:12–13
[12] We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, [13] and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. (ESV)

The passage emphasises respect for those who “labor among you,” particularly those who exercise spiritual leadership and admonition. There is an interesting contrast with the  observation about idleness. Paul expects the church to recognize labour—not merely visible results, but the often demanding work of caring for, teaching, correcting, and building up God's people.

The church therefore has responsibilities in both directions:
*Leaders: faithfully labor, lead, and admonish.
*Congregation: respect and esteem them because of their work.
*Everyone: pursue peace and seek one another's good.

The Christian who is waiting for Christ should not become a burden to others but a blessing to others.

Reflection

The passage ultimately turns our eyes away from speculation about the timing of Christ's return and toward faithfulness in ordinary Christian life. We wait for the Lord by remaining awake in faith, loving others, serving diligently, encouraging the weak, correcting the idle, pursuing peace, and continually seeking the good of others.

In that sense, the best preparation for the Day of the Lord is not knowing when He will come, but being found faithful when He comes.

Prayer

Father, thank You for Your love and for the hope we have in Christ. Help us to stay awake, faithful, and ready as we await the Day of the Lord. Keep us from idleness, strengthen us to serve others, and teach us to encourage and build one another up. May our lives honour You while we wait for Jesus. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Don’t Let the Fear of People Keep You in the Dark. What if the greatest danger to your faith isn’t doubt—but caring more about what people think than what God thinks? John 12 reveals the danger of choosing human approval over God’s glory. Today, let’s discover why Jesus calls us out of darkness and into His light.

John 12 presents a sobering picture: Jesus had performed “so many signs” before the people, yet “they still did not believe in him” (v. 37). The problem was not a lack of evidence. They had seen His works, heard His words, and witnessed His glory, yet many still refused to believe.

Isaiah’s prophecy reveals the seriousness of unbelief. Persistent rejection of God can result in a hardened heart that becomes increasingly resistant to the truth (vv. 38–40). This is a warning that we should never treat unbelief lightly. The more we resist God's light, the more difficult it becomes to see our need for Him.

Yet John gives another sobering example. Some of the authorities “believed in him,” but they were unwilling to confess Him publicly because they feared the Pharisees. Why? “For they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God” (v. 43).

This exposes a temptation that can affect even those who intellectually believe in Jesus: the fear of people can become greater than the fear of God. Jesus then declares that He has come as light into the world:

“I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.” (v. 46)

Jesus does not merely give us information about God. He reveals the Father. “Whoever sees me sees him who sent me” (v. 45). To believe in Jesus is to believe in the One who sent Him.

But Jesus also makes clear that His words demand a response. He came to save, not to condemn the world (v. 47), yet rejection of His words carries eternal consequences. His very word will testify against those who reject Him “on the last day” (v. 48).

The wonderful truth is that the Father's commandment is “eternal life” (v. 50). Jesus speaks exactly what the Father has commanded because His mission is to bring people out of darkness and into life.

Reflection

The question is not simply, “Do I believe that Jesus exists?” The deeper question is, “Whose glory do I desire?”

We can know about Jesus and still be tempted to remain silent because we fear what people may think. We can hear His Word and still refuse to obey it because we value human approval more than God's approval.

John 12 therefore calls us to examine our hearts: Am I living for the glory that comes from people, or for the glory that comes from God? Jesus is the Light. We do not need to remain in darkness. We do not need to hide our faith because of fear. And we do not need to seek our ultimate identity in human approval.

Believe in Christ. Walk in His light. Obey His Word. And seek the glory that comes from God rather than the praise of people.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, Thank You for sending Jesus, the Light of the world. Help us to believe in Him, obey His Word, and never allow the fear or approval of people to become more important than Your glory. Give us courage to walk in Your light and faithfully follow Christ each day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

以赛亚的预言揭示了不信的严重性。持续地拒绝神会导致心硬，从而越来越抗拒真理（38–40节）。这是对我们的警告：我们绝不可轻视不信。我们越是抵挡神的光，就越难看清自己对祂的需要。

然而，约翰又举了一个发人深省的例子。有些有权有势的人“信了他”，却因惧怕法利赛人而不愿公开承认祂。为什么呢？“因为他们爱人的荣耀，过于爱　神的荣耀”（第43节）。

这揭示了一种诱惑，甚至那些在理智上相信耶稣的人也会受到影响：对人的惧怕可能会超过对神的敬畏。随后，耶稣宣告祂是以光之姿降临世上的：

反思

我们可能了解耶稣，却仍因惧怕他人的看法而选择沉默；我们可能听见祂的话语，却仍因更看重人的认可而非神的认可而拒绝顺服。

因此，《约翰福音》第12章呼吁我们省察内心：我活着是为了来自人的荣耀，还是为了来自神的荣耀？耶稣就是那光。我们无需停留在黑暗中，无需因恐惧而隐藏自己的信仰，也无需在人的认可中寻求我们最终的身份。

信靠基督。行在祂的光中。遵行祂的话语。并寻求来自神的荣耀，而非人的称赞。

QT 17/09/2026 Thu 1Thessalonians 4 Until He Comes: Living Holy, Grieving with Hope

Can adultery really hurt more than just the people involved? And when someone we love dies, how can we grieve without losing hope? In 1 Thessalonians 4, Paul gives us two powerful answers: live holy today, and hope in Christ forever.

(1) 1 Thessalonians 4:1–12 — Holiness in Our Relationships
Sexual immorality, including adultery, is not merely a private sin or a violation of God’s command. It is an offense against the Lord and a wrong committed against other people. It can deeply wound spouses, families, and others involved, while also bringing destructive spiritual and personal consequences upon the sinner.

Paul begins by reminding the Thessalonians that they already know how they ought to live in order to “please God” (4:1). His particular emphasis is sanctification: “For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality” (4:3).

Several important truths emerge:
*Sexual holiness is God’s will. Christian morality is not based merely on social convention or personal preference; it is rooted in God's command.
*Adultery and sexual immorality harm others. Sin that appears to involve only two people can affect spouses, children, families, churches, and communities.
*The body and relationships matter to God. Paul warns believers not to “transgress and wrong his brother” in this matter (4:6).
*Sexual sin is ultimately rebellion against God. Paul says, “the Lord is an avenger in all these things” (4:6), and reminds them that God has called believers “not for impurity, but in holiness” (4:7).
*The Christian response is sanctification, not merely self-control. The believer is called to live differently because he belongs to God and has been given the Holy Spirit (4:8).

Paul then broadens the subject from sexual purity to Christian love and responsible living. The believer is to “love one another” (4:9), live quietly, mind his own affairs, work with his hands, and conduct himself properly toward outsiders (4:10–12).

Devotional emphasis:
Holiness is not simply avoiding a forbidden act. It is learning to love God and others rightly. Sexual sin takes something that God designed for covenantal faithfulness and turns it into an instrument of selfishness, deception, and harm. Therefore, Christians are called not merely to ask, “What am I allowed to do?” but, “How can I live in a way that pleases God and genuinely seeks the good of others?”

(2) 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18 — Hope in the Face of Death
The Christian response to grief is not the denial of sorrow, but hope grounded in the return of Christ and the certainty of eternal fellowship with Him.

Paul does not tell the Thessalonians not to grieve. Rather, he says that they should not grieve “as others do who have no hope” (4:13). Christian grief is real, but it is fundamentally different because it rests upon the resurrection of Jesus:

“For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep.” (4:14)
Paul directs their attention toward “the coming of the Lord” (4:15). At Christ's return, those who have died in Christ will be raised, and believers who remain alive will be caught up together with them to meet the Lord.
The climax is found in verse 17: “And so we will always be with the Lord.”
That is the ultimate Christian hope. The comfort is not merely that our loved ones will live again, nor simply that death will be defeated. The greatest promise is eternal presence with Christ.

Therefore Paul concludes: “Therefore encourage one another with these words.” (4:18)

Take away:
When Christians grieve, Scripture does not require them to suppress their tears or pretend that death does not hurt. Instead, it calls them to look beyond the grave to Christ. The resurrection of Jesus guarantees the resurrection of those who belong to Him, His coming guarantees our gathering to Him, and His promise guarantees that we will always be with Him.

Because we belong to God, we are called to live holy lives that honour Him and do no wrong to others (4:1–12). Because Christ has died and risen and will come again, we can grieve with hope, knowing that those who belong to Christ will be with Him forever (4:13–18). Live faithfully now because Christ is coming, and grieve hopefully because Christ is coming.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, Thank You for Your Word and for calling us to live holy lives that honour You and love others faithfully. When we face sin, temptation, and grief, help us to look to Jesus and hold firmly to the hope of His coming. Teach us to live faithfully today and to hope confidently for the day when we will always be with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

(1) 《帖撒罗尼迦前书》4:1–12 —— 人际关系中的圣洁
淫乱（包括通奸）不仅仅是一种私下的罪，也不仅仅是违背了神的诫命。它是冒犯主的行为，也是对他人所犯的过错。它会深深伤害配偶、家庭以及其他相关人士，同时也会给犯罪者带来毁灭性的属灵和个人后果。

Paul wasn’t chasing fame, money, or applause. He was willing to suffer, serve, and love people for the sake of the gospel. That’s the heart of 1 Thessalonians 2. How do you know if someone or even ourselves are genuinely serving God—or simply using religion for themselves? Paul gives us the answer in 1 Thessalonians 2.

1 Thessalonians 2 gives us a beautiful picture of what authentic Christian ministry looks like. Paul is not merely defending himself; he is showing that the gospel produces a particular kind of life in those who proclaim it.

(1) A ministry motivated by the gospel, not self-interest — vv. 1–12

Paul reminds the Thessalonians that his ministry among them was genuine. He and his companions did not come seeking popularity, money, or personal glory. Instead, they proclaimed the gospel despite opposition and suffering.

Paul describes their conduct with remarkable tenderness:

“We were gentle among you, like a nursing mother taking care of her own children.” (v. 7)

And later: “Like a father with his children, we exhorted you and encouraged you.” (v. 11)

Paul therefore presents both the tenderness of a mother and the guidance of a father. This challenges us to ask: When we serve Christ, what motivates us? It is possible to do Christian work while secretly seeking recognition, influence, or approval. But gospel ministry flows from love for Christ and love for people.

The faithful servant does not ask, “What can these people do for me?” but, “How can I faithfully lead these people toward Christ?”

(2) Receiving God's Word as God's Word — vv. 13–16

Paul gives thanks that the Thessalonians received his message “not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God.” That is the heart of Christian faith. The power of the gospel does not ultimately rest in the personality of the preacher. It rests in God's Word. Paul himself was merely the messenger. The Thessalonians' faith was grounded not in Paul's charisma, but in God's truth.

This is important for us today. We should appreciate faithful teachers and pastors, but our confidence must ultimately rest in God's Word rather than God's messenger. And receiving God's Word also carries a cost. The Thessalonians suffered because they followed Christ. Genuine faith does not necessarily make life easier; sometimes faithfulness brings opposition.

Yet suffering for Christ is not evidence that God has abandoned us. The Thessalonians were walking in the same path as other believers who had gone before them.

(3) Christian love remains strong even in physical separation — vv. 17–18

Paul says that he was “torn away” from them (v. 17). The language is remarkably emotional. Paul did not regard the Thessalonians as merely people to whom he had preached and then moved on. They were his spiritual family. He says:

“We endeavored the more eagerly and with great desire to see you face to face.” (v. 17)

Physical distance did not produce emotional distance. This is a powerful reminder that Christian fellowship is more than attending the same gathering. The church is a family whose members genuinely care for one another. Paul could not be with them physically, but they remained “in heart.”

(4) Our ultimate hope is Christ's return — vv. 19–20

Paul concludes by looking toward the future: What will matter when Jesus returns? For Paul, one of the great joys of that day will be seeing the people he led to Christ standing before Jesus. He calls them his “crown” and his “glory.” (vv. 19, 20)

The picture comes from the wreath awarded to a victorious athlete. Paul is saying, in effect: “When Christ returns, you will be part of my joy before Him.” This changes our priorities. Much of what we pursue in this life will eventually disappear—possessions, achievements, status, recognition. But people transformed by the gospel have eternal significance.

Devotional reflection

1 Thessalonians 2 challenges us to examine why we serve Christ, how we treat people, and where our hope is placed. Paul's ministry was marked by:

*Courage — he preached despite opposition.
*Integrity — he did not exploit the people he served.
*Gentleness — he cared for them like a mother.
*Faithfulness — he instructed them like a father.
*Love — separation did not diminish his concern.
*Perseverance — suffering did not make him abandon his calling.
*Hope — he looked forward to presenting believers to Christ.

The question for us is not simply, “Am I doing Christian things?” It is: “Does my life demonstrate the character of the gospel I profess?”

A faithful Christian life should make the gospel believable—not because our lives are perfect, but because our conduct increasingly reflects the character of Christ.

Prayer

Heavenly Father. Thank You for Your Word and for the gospel of Jesus Christ. Give us hearts that serve with humility, love with sincerity, and remain faithful through every trial. Help us live not for recognition, but for Your glory. Keep our eyes fixed on Christ and His return. Guard us from seeking recognition, comfort, or approval for ourselves. Teach us to love Your people sincerely and to treasure them as eternal brothers and sisters in Christ. Help us receive Your Word not merely as human teaching, but as Your living and powerful Word. And keep our eyes fixed on the day when Christ returns. May our greatest joy be that we have faithfully served You and helped others know and follow Jesus. In Jesus' name, amen.

Jesus is coming back—but how should we live while we wait? In 1 Thessalonians 1, we discover a powerful pattern: turn to God, serve Christ, proclaim the Gospel, and keep waiting with faith, love, and hope. Are you ready for His return? Let’s dive in.

1 Thessalonians 1 gives us a powerful picture of a Christ-centred, gospel-shaped, and second-coming-focused church. The chapter begins with thanksgiving and ends with expectation: the Thessalonians turned to God, served the living God, and waited for His Son from heaven.

(1) A Faith That Works — “Your work of faith” (v. 3)

Paul remembers their work of faith. Genuine faith does not remain invisible. When people truly trust Christ, their faith begins to produce a changed life. Their faith moved them to action.

Faith believes Christ. Faith follows Christ. Faith works because of Christ.

(2) A Love That Labors — “Labor of love” (v. 3)

Christian love is not merely an emotion or a kind word. It costs something. Paul saw their labour of love—love that was willing to serve, sacrifice, endure, and bless others.

The Gospel produces people who don't merely ask, “What can Christ do for me?” They begin asking, “How can I serve Christ and others?”

(3) A Hope That Endures — “Steadfastness of hope” (v. 3)

Their hope was not wishful thinking. Their hope was anchored “in our Lord Jesus Christ.” Because Christ is coming again, believers can remain steadfast even when circumstances are painful. Their present suffering did not cancel their future hope.

The certainty of Christ's return gives strength for today's trials.

(4) A Gospel That Comes With Power (v. 5)

Verse 5 says: “Our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction.”

The Gospel is communicated through words, but it is not merely words. The Holy Spirit takes the proclaimed Gospel and brings conviction and transformation. That is why evangelism requires both faithful proclamation and dependence upon the Holy Spirit.

We cannot transform hearts. God does. Our responsibility is to faithfully proclaim Christ.

(5) A Life That Becomes an Example (v. 6)

The Thessalonians became imitators of Paul and of the Lord, even though they received the Word “in much affliction.” That is striking. Their suffering did not silence their testimony. Instead, their perseverance made their testimony more powerful. Verse 7 says they became “an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia.”

A transformed life becomes a living testimony. People may argue with our words, but it is difficult to ignore a life genuinely transformed by Christ.

(6) A Church That Sounds Forth the Word (v. 8)

Verse 8 is especially powerful: “The word of the Lord sounded forth from you…”

The Thessalonians did not keep the Gospel within the four walls of their church. Their faith went forth. They received the Gospel—and then the Gospel went out through them.

That gives us an important evangelistic principle: We are not merely recipients of the Gospel; we are messengers of the Gospel. God blesses us so that His message can go through us to others.

(7) A Life That Has Truly Turned to God (v. 9)

Verse 9 describes their conversion: “You turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God.”

Biblical conversion involves both turning from and turning to. They turned from idols. They turned to God. They turned from false worship to the living and true God.

The Gospel does not merely add Jesus to an already crowded life. Jesus becomes Lord.

(8) A Church That Is Waiting for Jesus (v. 10)

And finally, verse 10 gives us the great hope: “To wait for his Son from heaven…”

Notice the progression:
*They turned to God.
*They served God.
*They waited for Christ.

The Christian life is lived between conversion and Christ's return. We serve while we wait. We evangelize while we wait. We endure while we wait. We pursue holiness while we wait.

And we wait with confidence because Jesus was “raised from the dead” and “delivers us from the wrath to come.”

Takeaway

1 Thessalonians 1 therefore gives us a beautiful picture of what the Gospel produces:

What if the biggest opportunity to share Christ is the door God has just opened—but we’re too distracted to notice it? Colossians 4 tells us: stay steadfast in prayer, stay watchful, give thanks, and pray for open doors!

In Colossians 4:2, Paul is not merely telling Christians to pray more, but to cultivate a prayer-shaped life marked by perseverance, spiritual alertness for open doors, and thanksgiving.

[2] Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. (ESV)

(1) Steadfast in Prayer — “Continue steadfastly”

Paul’s command, “Continue steadfastly in prayer,” points to persistence and constancy. Prayer is not meant to be an emergency response when problems arise; it is to become a regular feature of Christian life.

This fits naturally with:
*Luke 18:1 — “always pray and not lose heart.”
*1 Thessalonians 5:17 — “pray without ceasing.”
*Romans 12:12 — “be constant in prayer.”
*Acts 2:42 — the early church “devoted themselves” to prayer.

The Christian therefore does not stop praying simply because circumstances have not changed. Persistent prayer is an expression of persistent faith. Paul himself is an excellent example. He was facing imprisonment, opposition, suffering, and ministry obstacles, yet he did not tell the Colossians to abandon prayer because circumstances were difficult. Instead, he asked them to pray.

(2) Watchful in Prayer — “Being watchful”

The second command concerns the spiritual posture in which we pray. To be watchful is to remain awake, alert, and attentive. Christian prayer is not passive repetition. We pray while paying attention to:

• what God is doing,
• what is happening in our own hearts,
• the spiritual dangers around us,
• opportunities for gospel ministry,
• and the reality that Christ will return.

This is especially significant when Colossians 4:2 is read alongside Colossians 3:1–4. The eternal pespective is that believers have already been raised with Christ, but they still await the day when they will “appear with him in glory.”

(3) Thanksgiving in Prayer — “With thanksgiving”

Thanksgiving is not an optional decoration added to prayer after our requests have been made. In Colossians, thanksgiving is a recurring theme:

*Colossians 1:12 — giving thanks to the Father.
*Colossians 2:7 — abounding in thanksgiving.
*Colossians 3:15 — being thankful.
*Colossians 3:17 — giving thanks through Christ.
*Colossians 4:2 — continuing in prayer with thanksgiving.

Why is thanksgiving so important? Because thanksgiving reminds us of what God has already done, even while we ask Him for what we still need. The Christian can pray for an open door while simultaneously thanking God for the doors He has already opened.

We can pray about today's problems while remembering yesterday's mercies. We can ask God for future grace while giving thanks for past grace.

(4) Pray for Open Doors

The movement from verse 2 to verse 3 is particularly beautiful:
“Continue steadfastly in prayer…”
“At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word…”

Paul's first specific prayer request is not, “Pray that my circumstances become comfortable.” It is, “Pray for an open door for the gospel.” Paul was imprisoned, yet he was thinking about evangelistic opportunity. This gives an important perspective for Christian prayer: Our difficulties should not cause us to stop looking for opportunities to proclaim Christ.

Sometimes we pray, “Lord, remove this obstacle.” But Paul teaches us also to pray, “Lord, open a door through this obstacle.” The prison itself did not prevent God's Word from advancing. Paul's circumstances became part of his ministry context.

(5) Before All Doors Are Eventually Closed

The Christian age is an age of gospel opportunity, but it will not continue indefinitely. Christ will return, judgment will come, and the opportunity to respond to the gospel in this present age will end. Therefore, steadfast prayer should produce evangelistic urgency rather than complacency.

Reflection:

*Steadfastness asks: Will I keep praying when nothing seems to change?

*Watchfulness asks: Am I spiritually awake enough to recognize what God is doing?

*Thanksgiving asks: Can I remember God's faithfulness while I wait for His answer?

*Open doors ask: Am I praying not merely for a better life, but for greater opportunity to make Christ known?

So Colossians 4:2–6 presents prayer and evangelism as intimately connected. A praying church should become a watchful church, and a watchful church should become an evangelistic church.

Prayer

Father, thank You for Your grace and faithfulness. Teach us to continue steadfastly in prayer, to remain watchful, and to give thanks in every circumstance. Open doors for the Gospel, give us courage to recognise them, walk through them, and help us faithfully make Christ known while there is still opportunity. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

(1) 恒切祷告——“要恒切”

保罗的吩咐“要恒切祷告”，强调的是坚持和恒常。祷告不应只是在问题出现时的应急措施；它应当成为基督徒生活中的常态。

这与以下经文自然契合：
*路加福音 18:1 — “总要祷告，不可灰心。”
*帖撒罗尼迦前书 5:17 — “要常常祷告。”
*罗马书 12:12 — “要恒切祷告。”
*使徒行传 2:42 —— 早期教会“专心”于祷告。

因此，基督徒不会仅仅因为处境没有改变就停止祷告。坚持祷告是坚定信心的体现。保罗本人就是一个极好的榜样。他面临监禁、反对、苦难和事工上的障碍，但他并没有因为处境艰难就告诉歌罗西人放弃祷告。相反，他要求他们祷告。

(2) 在祷告中警醒——“要警醒”

第二条命令涉及我们祷告时的属灵态度。警醒意味着保持清醒、警觉和专注。基督徒的祷告并非被动的重复。我们在祷告时要留意：

• 神正在做什么，
• 我们自己内心正在发生什么，
• 周围的属灵危险，
• 传扬福音的机会，
• 以及基督必再来的事实。

当将《歌罗西书》4:2与3:1–4结合阅读时，这一点尤为重要。从永恒的视角来看，信徒虽然已经与基督一同复活，但他们仍在等待那“与祂一同显现在荣耀中”的日子。

(3) 祷告中的感恩——“存着感恩的心”

*歌罗西书2:7 —— 满有感恩。

为什么感恩如此重要？因为感恩提醒我们，即便我们在向神求取尚未得着的需求时，也要记念神已经为我们所做的一切。基督徒可以在祈求神开启新门的同时，也感谢祂已经为我们开启的门。

我们可以为今天的问题祷告，同时铭记昨天的恩典；我们可以求神赐下未来的恩典，同时为过去的恩典献上感谢。

(4) 为敞开的门祷告

第2节到第3节的过渡尤为优美：
“要恒切祷告……”
“也要为我们祷告，求　神为我们开传道的门……”

保罗提出的第一个具体祷告请求并不是“求神使我的处境变得舒适”，而是“求神为福音敞开一扇门”。保罗虽身陷囹圄，却仍在思虑传福音的机会。这为基督徒的祷告提供了重要的视角：我们的困境不应使我们停止寻找传扬基督的机会。

有时我们祷告说：“主啊，挪去这个障碍。”但保罗也教导我们祷告说：“主啊，请借着这个障碍为我们敞开一扇门。”监狱本身并没有阻止神的话语向前推进。保罗所处的环境反而成了他事工的一部分。

(5) 在所有大门最终关闭之前

基督教时代是一个传福音的黄金时代，但它不会无限期地持续下去。基督必将再来，审判必将降临，而这个时代中回应福音的机会也将终结。因此，恒切的祷告应当带来 “传福音的紧迫感”，而非自满。

反思：

*恒切祷告的考验：当一切看似毫无改变时，我是否仍会坚持祷告？

*警醒的考验：我在灵里是否足够清醒，能认出神正在做的事？

*感恩的考验：在等待神回应的同时，我能否记念神的信实？

*敞开的门提出这样的问题：我的祷告是否不仅仅是为了更美好的生活，更是为了获得更多传扬基督的机会？

因此，《歌罗西书》4:2–6 表明祷告与传福音是紧密相连的。一个祷告的教会应当成为一个警醒的教会，而一个警醒的教会应当成为一个传福音的教会。

What if the greatest victory in history looked like a defeat? In John 12, Jesus tells us that a grain must fall and die to produce much fruit. The cross wasn’t the end—it was the beginning of life. What does that mean for you and me? Let’s discover it together.

John 12:20–36 presents a powerful picture of Jesus’ mission and the meaning of His approaching death. Some Greeks came to Jerusalem to worship and expressed their desire to see Jesus. Their request becomes the occasion for Jesus to reveal that the hour of His glorification has arrived. His “glory” would come through His sacrificial death, resurrection, and the salvation of people from every nation.

(1) Jesus’ death brings abundant life (vv. 23–24).

Jesus compares Himself to a grain of wheat: unless it falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. This points directly to His death on the cross. His sacrifice would bring salvation and spiritual life to many. The gospel reminds us that our salvation rests not in our goodness, but in Christ’s sacrificial work for us.

(2) Following Jesus requires surrender (vv. 25–26).

Jesus teaches that those who love their life in this world will lose it, while those who surrender their lives to Him will keep them for eternal life. Genuine discipleship involves denying self, turning from sin, and placing Christ above our own ambitions and comforts. Jesus does not merely call us to admire Him; He calls us to follow Him.

(3) Jesus willingly embraced the cross (vv. 27–28).

Jesus acknowledges the deep anguish He faces: “Now is my soul troubled.” Yet He does not ask to escape the cross. Instead, He submits to the Father’s purpose: “Father, glorify your name.” His suffering was not an accident or a defeat. It was the obedient fulfillment of God’s saving plan.

(4) The cross brings judgment and victory (vv. 31–33).

Jesus declares that the ruler of this world will be cast out and that, when He is lifted up, He will draw people to Himself. The cross appears to be Christ’s humiliation, but it is actually His victory over sin and Satan. Through His death, Jesus opens the way of salvation to all who believe.

(5) We are called to walk in the light (vv. 35–36).

Jesus urges His hearers to believe in the light while they still have the light. The proper response to the gospel is faith. We should not postpone turning to Christ. Those who believe in Him become “sons of light,” called to live according to the truth they have received.

Reflection

John 12 reminds us that Christianity is centred on the cross. Jesus willingly gave Himself so that sinners could receive eternal life. His death produced fruit far beyond what His disciples could initially understand, reaching people from every nation—including the Greeks who sought Him.

The passage therefore calls us to two responses: believe in Christ and surrender our lives to Him. We cannot truly follow Jesus while making ourselves the center of our lives. The One who gave His life for us deserves our whole-hearted devotion.

Prayer

Heavenly Father. Thank You for sending Jesus to give His life for our salvation. Help us to trust Him, surrender our lives to You, and walk in Your light each day. May our lives bear fruit that brings glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

What if following Christ means more than just believing—it means becoming? Colossians 3 challenges us to put to death the old, put on the new, and set our minds above. So today, the question is simple: Are you still living like the old you, or are you living the new life Christ has given you?

Paul reminds believers that because we have been raised with Christ, our lives should reflect our new identity in Him.

(1) Put to Death What Belongs to the Old Life

“Put to death therefore what is earthly in you…” — Colossians 3:5

Paul calls us to put away sexual immorality, impurity, greed, anger, malice, slander, obscene talk, and lying. The Christian life is not about managing sin—it is about putting sin to death. Ask yourself: What do I need to surrender and put to death today?

(2) Put On the Character of Christ

“Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved…” — Colossians 3:12

Because we are God's chosen, holy, and beloved people, we are to put on compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, forgiveness, and love. We don't do these things to become God's beloved. We do them because we already are His beloved in Christ.

And above everything:
“Put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.” — Colossians 3:14

(3) Live It Out in Every Relationship

Paul then brings the gospel into our homes, families, workplaces, and everyday relationships (3:18–4:1).

Our new life in Christ should be visible in how we speak, forgive, love, serve, and treat others. Finally, Paul gives us the guiding principle:

“Whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus.” — Colossians 3:17

Not just church activities. Everything. Our ordinary lives become opportunities to display Christ.

The Daily Challenge

*Look Up — Set your mind on Christ.
*Put Off — Put to death what belongs to the old life.
*Put On — Clothe yourself with Christlike character.
*Live It Out — Let Jesus shape your relationships and everyday choices.

The Christian life is not simply about becoming a better person. It is about living out the new life we have received in Christ.

Prayer

Father, thank You for giving us new life in Christ. Help us to set our minds on things above, put to death what dishonours You, and put on the character of Christ. Let His peace rule in our hearts and His Word dwell richly within us. May everything we say and  do point people to Jesus. In Jesus' name, Amen.

(3) 在每一段关系中活出福音

随后，保罗将福音带入我们的家中、家庭、工作场所以及日常的人际关系中（3:18–4:1）。

我们在基督里的新生命，应当体现在我们说话、宽恕、爱人、服侍以及待人接物的方式上。最后，保罗给了我们一个指导原则：

“凡你们所作的，无论是言语或行为，都要奉主耶稣的名，借着他感谢父　神。”——《歌罗西书》3:17

不仅仅是教会活动。而是所有事情。我们平凡的生活都成了彰显基督的机会。

QT 09/09/2026 Wed Colossians 2 Full in Christ: From Empty Religion to Triumphant Faith

What if you’re already complete—but you keep searching for more? More rules, more religion, more human wisdom? Colossians 2 gives us a powerful answer: you don’t need more… you need to see how much you already have in Christ! And when you’re full in Christ, you can rise above empty religion and walk in His triumph!

Colossians 2 moves our attention away from external religious observances and human regulations toward the fullness, sufficiency, and triumph of being in Christ.

Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith…” — Colossians 2:6–7 (ESV)

Colossians 2 brings us to the heart of the Christian life: Christ is sufficient. Paul warns the believers not to be taken captive by “philosophy and empty deceit” (2:8), nor to be distracted by regulations concerning food, drink, festivals, new moons, or Sabbaths (2:16).

These things may appear religious, spiritual, or even wise, but they cannot give what Christ has already given.

(1) In Christ, we have fullness

Paul declares: “For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled in him…” — Colossians 2:9–10 (ESV)

This is the abundance of the Christian's position in Christ. We do not begin with Christ and then need something else to complete us. We have been filled in Him. The world continually tells us that we need something more—more knowledge, more experiences, more achievement, more recognition, more rules, more spirituality. But Colossians directs our eyes back to Christ. Christ is not merely part of our spiritual life. Christ is our fullness.

(2) In Christ, we have a new identity

Paul reminds the believers that they have been:

• circumcised with a spiritual circumcision;
• buried with Christ in baptism;
• raised with Him through faith;
• made alive together with Him;
• forgiven of their trespasses;
• released from the record of debt that stood against them.

This is not merely theological information. It is the believer's new reality. The Christian does not have to spend every day trying to earn an identity before God. In Christ, we have already received what we could never accomplish for ourselves. Our confidence therefore rests not in how well we performed today, but in what Christ has accomplished for us.

(3) External regulations cannot conquer the flesh

Paul asks: “Why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations—‘Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch’” (2:20–21)? Such rules may look impressive. They may even give the appearance of wisdom, humility, and self-denial. Yet Paul exposes their weakness:

“They are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.” — Colossians 2:23

The problem is not that discipline, wisdom, or godly boundaries are inherently wrong. The problem is believing that human regulations can produce the holiness that only Christ can produce. We can change our outward behaviour while leaving the heart untouched. We can avoid certain things and still harbour pride, lust, greed, bitterness, self-righteousness, or selfish ambition. Rules, threats of fines or cane might restrain behaviour temporarily; only Christ can transform the heart.

(4) Don't exchange the substance for the shadow

Paul says that food, drink, festivals, new moons, and Sabbaths are: “a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ.” — Colossians 2:17

A shadow can point us toward something real, but we would be foolish to cling to the shadow after encountering the reality. The Christian life can similarly become consumed by secondary matters.

We can quarrel over practices, preferences, traditions, interpretations, and religious observances while neglecting the magnificent reality to which they should point: Christ Himself. The question is therefore not merely, “Am I doing the right religious things?”
The deeper question is: “Am I living from the reality of Christ?”

(5) In Christ, we are triumphant

Perhaps the greatest encouragement in Colossians 2 is found in verse 15: “He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.”

Our victory does not begin with our ability to overcome. Our victory begins with Christ's victory. At the cross, what appeared to be Christ's defeat became His triumph. The powers of darkness were disarmed. The debt against us was cancelled. Sin's accusation was dealt with. Therefore, we do not fight for victory as though the outcome depends entirely upon us. We fight from Christ's victory.

When false teaching comes, we have Christ. When accusation comes, we have Christ. When temptation comes, we have Christ. When religious legalism comes, we have Christ. When human wisdom promises a better answer, we have Christ. When the flesh demands control, we have Christ.

Application: Live From What You Already Have

Colossians 2 challenges us to stop living as though Christ is insufficient. The believer is not spiritually empty, waiting for some secret knowledge or special religious experience to complete what Christ began. You have been filled in Him. So, instead of being captivated by every new teaching, walk in Christ. Depend upon Christ. Hold fast to the substance—Christ.

Reflection

• Am I finding my spiritual security in Christ, or in my religious performance?
• Are there “lesser things” that I allow to become greater sources of division or anxiety than they should be?
• What human rules or expectations am I trusting to accomplish what only Christ can do in my heart?
• What difference does Christ's triumph at the cross make to the way I face temptation, accusation, and spiritual opposition?
• What would it look like today to “walk in him” rather than simply try harder?

Prayer

Heavenly Father. Thank You that we are complete in Christ. Keep our hearts from being distracted by empty teachings, human rules, and the things that pull us away from You. Help us to be rooted in Christ, trusting His finished work and walking daily in His victory. May we find our fullness, freedom, and hope in Jesus alone. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

《歌罗西书》第2章将我们的注意力从外在的宗教仪式和人的规条，转向了在基督里所拥有的丰盛、充足与得胜。

“6 你们怎样接受了基督耶稣为主，就当照样在他里面行事为人，7 按着你们所学到的，在他里面扎根、建造，信心坚定，满有感谢的心。”——《歌罗西书》2:6–7

《歌罗西书》第2章引领我们进入基督徒生活的核心：基督是充足的。保罗警告信徒，不要被“借着哲学和骗人的空谈”（2:8）掳去，也不要被关于饮食、节期、新月或安息日的规条（2:16）所分散注意力。

这些事物看似虔敬、属灵，甚至显得睿智，却无法赐予基督已经赐下的恩典。

(1) 在基督里，我们拥有丰盛

保罗宣告：“9 因为　神本性的一切丰盛，都有形有体地住在基督里面，10 你们也是在他里面得了丰盛。他是一切执政掌权者的元首。”——《歌罗西书》2:9–10

这就是基督徒在基督里所拥有的丰盛。我们并非先从基督开始，然后还需要其他东西来使我们得以完全。我们在祂里面已经得着了丰盛。世人不断告诉我们，我们需要更多——更多的知识、更多的经历、更多的成就、更多的认可、更多的规则、更多的属灵体验。但《歌罗西书》引导我们的目光重新转向基督。基督不仅仅是我们属灵生命的一部分，基督就是我们的丰盛。

(2) 在基督里，我们拥有新的身份

保罗提醒信徒们，他们已经：

• 受了属灵的割礼；
• 在洗礼中与基督一同埋葬；
• 因着信心与祂一同复活；
• 与祂一同活过来；
• 过犯得了赦免；
• 从那控告他们的罪状中被释放。

这不仅仅是神学知识，更是信徒的新现实。基督徒无需每天费力去在神面前“赚取”身份。在基督里，我们已经领受了那些靠自己永远无法成就的恩典。因此，我们的信心不在于今天表现得如何出色，而在于基督为我们所成就的一切。

(3) 外在的规条无法战胜肉体

保罗问道：“20 你们若与基督一同死了，脱离了世俗的言论，为什么仍然好像活在世俗中一样，21 拘守那“不可摸、不可尝、不可触”的规条呢？”（2:20–21）？这些规条看似令人印象深刻，甚至可能显得充满智慧、谦卑和自我克制。然而，保罗揭露了它们的软弱之处：

“其实只能叫人放纵肉体，再没有任何价值。”——《歌罗西书》2:23

问题并不在于纪律、智慧或合神心意的界限本身有错。问题在于相信人的规条能够带来唯有基督才能带来的圣洁。我们可能改变外在行为，却让内心依然如故。我们可以避开某些事物，却依然心怀骄傲、情欲、贪婪、苦毒、自义或自私的野心。规则、罚款或体罚的威胁或许能暂时约束行为；唯有基督才能改变人心。

(4) 不要用实质去换取影儿

保罗说，饮食、节期、新月和安息日都是：“这些不过是将来的事的影子，那真体却是属于基督的。” ——《歌罗西书》2:17

影子可以指引我们走向真实的事物，但若在遇见真实之后仍执着于影子，便是愚昧之举。基督徒的生活同样可能被次要的事物所占据。

我们可能因礼仪、偏好、传统、解释和宗教仪式而争执不休，却忽视了它们本应指向的宏伟现实：基督自己。因此，问题不仅仅在于：“我是否在做正确的宗教行为？” 更深层的问题是：“我是否活在基督的真实之中？”

(5) 在基督里，我们得胜

《歌罗西书》第2章中最鼓舞人心的经文或许就在第15节：“他既然靠着十字架胜过了一切执政掌权的，废除了他们的权势，就在凯旋的行列中，把他们公开示众。”

我们的得胜并非始于我们自身战胜的能力，而是始于基督的得胜。在十字架上，看似基督的失败，实则成了祂的得胜。黑暗的权势已被剥夺了武装，我们所欠的罪债已被赦免，罪的控告已被解决。因此，我们争战并非为了得胜，仿佛结果完全取决于我们；而是从基督的得胜出发去争战。

当异端教义来临时，我们有基督。当控告来临时，我们有基督。当试探来临时，我们有基督。当宗教律法主义来临时，我们有基督。当人的智慧许诺更好的答案时，我们有基督。当肉体要求掌控时，我们有基督。

应用：活出你已经拥有的

《歌罗西书》第二章挑战我们，不要再活得好像基督是不够的。信徒在灵里并非空虚，无需等待某种隐秘的知识或特殊的属灵经历来完成基督所开始的工作。你们在祂里面已经得了丰盛。因此，不要被各种新教导所俘虏，而要行在基督里。倚靠基督。持守那实质——基督。

反思

• 我是从基督那里获得属灵的保障，还是从自己的宗教表现中获得？
• 是否有某些“次要之事”，我却任其成为比实际更严重的分裂或焦虑之源？
• 我正依赖哪些人的规则或期望，来成就唯有基督才能在我心中成就的事？
• 基督在十字架上的得胜，对我面对试探、指控和属灵抵挡的方式有何影响？
• 今天，“在他里面行走”，而不是仅仅更加努力，会是什么样子？

祷告

Does your life ever feel like the same routine—work, chores, responsibilities, repeat? What if the ordinary isn’t meaningless? What if Christ is right there in the middle of it? In Colossians 1, Paul reveals the life-changing truth: Christ in you—the hope of glory!

Much of life can feel remarkably ordinary. We wake up, go to work, prepare meals, answer messages, care for our families, commute, study, pay bills, attend meetings, clean the house, and go to sleep—only to do much of it again the next day.

There may be moments when we wonder: Where is God in all of this? Where is the glory? Where is the meaning? Colossians 1 gives us a radically different perspective.

Paul does not tell us that we must escape ordinary life to experience Christ. Instead, he lifts our eyes so that we can see Christ in the middle of it. The Christian life is not ultimately about making our circumstances extraordinary. It is about discovering that Christ is extraordinary in every circumstance.

Paul's great declaration is: “Christ in you, the hope of glory.” — Colossians 1:27 (ESV)

Our hope is not found in a more exciting life, a more successful career, or a trouble-free tomorrow. Our hope is Christ Himself.

(1) Look Up: The Gospel Gives Us a New Perspective

Paul begins by thanking God for the Colossian believers:

“We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, because of the hope laid up for you in heaven.” — Colossians 1:3–5

Notice the connection: Faith → Love → Hope

Their faith in Christ produced love for God's people because they had a hope laid up for them in heaven. Their present lives were being shaped by a future reality. This is important because the mundane can become overwhelming when we see only what is immediately in front of us.

We see the unfinished work. The difficult relationship. The financial pressure. The unanswered prayer. The repetitive routine. But the gospel tells us to look beyond what is immediately visible. There is a hope laid up for us.  Our lives are not ultimately defined by today's circumstances. We belong to Christ. We have been forgiven. We have been reconciled to God. We have an inheritance that cannot perish. We have eternal hope.

Application
*How does the gospel change the way I see this ordinary moment?
*The kitchen can become a place of worship. The workplace can become a mission field. Parenting can become an expression of Christlike love. Serving others can become an act of devotion. Even waiting can become an opportunity to trust God. The gospel changes not necessarily where we are, but how we see where we are.

(2) Look at Christ: He Is Supreme Over Everything

Colossians 1 takes our eyes away from ourselves and fixes them on Christ. Paul writes:
“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created…” — Colossians 1:15–16

Then Paul declares: “And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” — Colossians 1:17 This is the heart of Christian perspective. Jesus is not merely part of our lives. Jesus is Lord over all of life.

(3) Look Within: Christ Is in You

Paul reaches one of the most astonishing truths in the entire passage: “Christ in you, the hope of glory.” — Colossians 1:27

This is not merely a beautiful Christian slogan. It is a profound gospel reality. The God who created the universe has made His dwelling with His people. The Christ who is supreme over creation is not distant from the believer. Christ is in you.

(4) Look Back: Remember What Christ Has Done

Colossians 1:21–22 reminds us where we came from:
“And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death…”  — Colossians 1:21–22

Paul does not flatter us. He reminds us that we were once alienated from God. Sin separated us from our Creator. We could not fix that separation through good works, religious activity, morality, or self-improvement. But Christ did what we could never do.
He reconciled us through His death.

(5) Look Forward: The Hope of Glory

Paul calls Christ in us: “the hope of glory.” Biblical hope is not wishful thinking. It is confident expectation based on God's promises. The Christian looks forward to glory because Christ has secured our future. Our present circumstances are not the final chapter. There is coming a day when faith will become sight. There is coming a day when suffering will end. There is coming a day when sin will be no more. There is coming a day when Christ will be fully revealed in His glory. And the believer will share in that glory. This changes how we live today.

(6) Rising Above the Mundane Does Not Mean Escaping It

Perhaps this is the greatest lesson. Rising above the mundane does not mean escaping ordinary life. It means seeing ordinary life through the greatness of Christ. We don't have to run away from everyday responsibilities to find God. We learn to encounter God **in the midst of them.

A Simple Daily Practice

Before beginning each day, pause and remember three truths from Colossians 1:
*Christ is above me. He is Lord over all things. I do not have to control everything.
*Christ is with me. He has reconciled me to God. I do not face today alone.
*Christ is in me. He is my hope of glory. My future is secure in Him.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, help me see this day through You rather than merely through my circumstances. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

生活中的大部分时刻都显得极其平凡。我们醒来、上班、做饭、回复信息、照顾家人、通勤、学习、缴账单、开会、打扫房子，然后入睡——第二天又重复着其中大部分事情。

或许会有这样的时刻，我们会疑惑：在这所有的一切中，神在哪里？荣耀在哪里？意义又在哪里？《歌罗西书》第一章为我们提供了一个截然不同的视角。

保罗并没有告诉我们，必须逃离平凡的生活才能经历基督。相反，他引导我们抬起目光，使我们能在平凡的生活中看见基督。基督徒生活的终极意义，不在于让我们的处境变得非凡，而在于发现基督在任何处境中都是非凡的。

我们看到未完成的工作、棘手的人际关系、经济压力、未蒙应允的祷告，以及日复一日的重复。但福音告诉我们要超越眼前所见。那里为我们存留着一份盼望。我们的生命最终并非由今日的处境所定义。我们属于基督，我们已蒙赦免，我们已与神和好，我们拥有一份不能朽坏的产业，我们拥有永恒的盼望。

*厨房可以成为敬拜的地方。职场可以成为宣教的禾场。养育子女可以成为彰显基督之爱的途径。服侍他人可以成为一种奉献的行为。甚至等待，也可以成为信靠神的契机。福音改变的未必是我们所处的地方，而是我们看待所处之地的眼光。

(2) 仰望基督：祂凌驾万有之上

《歌罗西书》第一章引导我们不再关注自己，而是将目光定睛在基督身上。保罗写道：
“15这爱子是那看不见的　神的形象，是首先的，在一切被造的之上。16 因为天上地上的万有：看得见的和看不见的，无论是坐王位的，或是作主的，或是执政的，或是掌权的，都是本着他造的；万有都是借着他，又是为着他而造的。”——《歌罗西书》1:15–16

随后保罗宣告：“他在万有之先；万有也一同靠着他而存在。”——《歌罗西书》1:17 这正是基督教世界观的核心。耶稣不仅仅是生命中的一部分，祂是掌管整个人生的主。

(3) 向内看：基督在你们里面

(5) 展望未来：荣耀的盼望

这或许是最重要的教训。超越平凡并不意味着逃避平凡的生活。它意味着透过基督的伟大来看待平凡的生活。我们不必逃避日常的责任去寻找神。我们要学会在这些责任之中与神相遇。

在每一天开始之前，停下来默想《歌罗西书》1章中的三个真理：
*基督在我之上。祂是一切的主。我不必掌控一切。
*基督与我同在。祂已使我与神和好。我今天并不孤单。

(1) Philippians 4:1–7 — Rejoice, Be Reasonable, and Live in Peace

Paul calls the believers to stand firm in the Lord, rejoice always, and demonstrate reasonableness toward others. It is a kind of "gentle forbearance” towards all, including those who are making life miserable for you or your friends. He even addresses conflict between Euodia and Syntyche, showing that Christian unity requires humility and a willingness to pursue peace.

The foundation is simple: “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.” — Philippians 4:4 (ESV)

And when anxiety comes, Paul points believers toward prayer and thanksgiving:
“The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything…” — Philippians 4:5–6 (ESV)

Take away: Our peace does not come from having perfect circumstances or perfect relationships. Our peace comes from the Lord.

Key thought: Rejoicing in the Lord + reasonableness toward others = a pathway toward peace.

(2) Philippians 4:8–9 — Think Right, Live Right

Paul moves from our relationships to our thought life. What we continually think about will influence how we live.

[8] Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things (ESV).

But Paul doesn't stop at thinking. He tells them to practice what they have learned, received, heard, and seen in him. Christian maturity isn't merely knowing what is right—it is thinking what is right and practicing what is right. Paul's life becomes an example for others to follow.

Key thought: Right thinking produces right living when God's truth is put into practice.

And the result?

“The God of peace will be with you.” — Philippians 4:9 (ESV)

(3) Philippians 4:10–23 — Give Faithfully, Trust God’s Provision

Paul rejoices because the Philippians renewed their concern for him and supported his ministry. Yet Paul makes an important distinction: he has learned to be content whether he has much or little.

“I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content.” — Philippians 4:11 (ESV)

Their generosity was not simply about meeting Paul's needs. It was partnership in the gospel. And Paul gives them this beautiful promise:

“My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:19 (ESV)

This verse is not a promise of unlimited material prosperity. It is a promise that God is faithful to care for His people according to His glorious riches in Christ.

Take away: We give because God has first given to us. We serve because we belong to Christ. And we trust God to provide as we faithfully participate in His work.

Key thought: Generous hearts trust a generous God. Rejoice in the Lord. Think on what is good. Practice what is right. Give faithfully. Trust God completely.

Prayer

Heavenly Father. Thank You for Your grace and faithfulness. Help us to rejoice in You always, to think on what is true and good, and to practice what pleases You. Give us peace when we are anxious, wisdom in our relationships, and generous hearts to support Your work. Teach us to trust that You will faithfully provide for every need according to Your riches in Christ Jesus. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Likes, achievements, money, reputation—what if none of it compares to knowing Jesus? Philippians 3 flips everything upside down: lose what holds you back, gain Christ, and press forward! The question is—what are you willing to leave behind to follow Jesus?”

(1) Philippians 3:1–11 — Christ Is Greater Than My Righteousness

True righteousness comes through faith in Christ, not through religious achievement. Paul warns believers not to place their confidence in religious credentials, heritage, or personal morality. Although Paul had an impressive religious background, he came to regard all of it as loss compared with knowing Christ.

“Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.” — Philippians 3:8 (ESV)

Gospel truth

The gospel exposes the insufficiency of our own righteousness. We cannot make ourselves acceptable to God through good works, religious identity, or personal achievement. Our righteousness comes through faith in Christ.

Paul's desire was not merely to know facts about Jesus but to know Christ personally—to share in His sufferings, experience the power of His resurrection, and ultimately be found in Him.

Devotional application

• What am I tempted to use as evidence that I am acceptable before God?
• Am I trusting in Christ's righteousness or my own performance?
• Is knowing Christ more valuable to me than success, reputation, or religious achievement?

(2) Philippians 3:12–21 — Pressing Toward the Goal

Because Christ has saved us, we continually pursue Him and look forward to His return. Paul makes it clear that he has not already reached perfection:

“Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.” — Philippians 3:12 (ESV)

The Christian life is therefore both secure and active. Christ has already made us His own, yet we continue to press forward in faith, holiness, obedience, and spiritual growth.

Paul contrasts those whose minds are set on earthly things with believers whose:

“citizenship is in heaven.” — Philippians 3:20 (ESV)

Our hope ultimately rests in Christ's return, when He will transform our lowly bodies to be like His glorious body.

Gospel truth

We do not pursue Christ in order to earn salvation. We pursue Him because Christ has already made us His own.

Our future is not determined by our present struggles. The believer looks forward to the day when Christ will complete His work in us.

Devotional application

• Am I continuing to press toward Christ, or have I become spiritually complacent?
• What earthly things are competing for my attention?
• Does the hope of Christ's return shape how I live today?

Central message of Philippians 3

We abandon confidence in ourselves, gain Christ through faith, press forward in Him, and live with our hope fixed on heaven. Christ is my righteousness (3:1–11). Christ is my goal and my hope. (3:12–21).

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, help me to see the surpassing worth of knowing Christ. Keep me from trusting in my own righteousness. Teach me to rest completely in Your finished work and to desire You above everything else. Thank You that Christ has made me His own. Help me to press forward rather than look back. Set my mind on heavenly things, strengthen me to pursue holiness, and keep my hope fixed on the return of Jesus. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

点赞、成就、金钱、声誉——如果这些都比不上认识耶稣呢？《腓立比书》第3章彻底颠覆了这一切：舍弃那些阻碍你的东西，得着基督，并勇往直前！问题是——为了跟随耶稣，你愿意舍弃什么？

(1) 《腓立比书》3:1–11 ——基督胜过我的义

真正的义来自对基督的信心，而非宗教上的成就。保罗告诫信徒，不要将信心寄托在宗教资历、传统或个人道德上。尽管保罗拥有令人瞩目的宗教背景，但他最终将这一切都视为亏损，因为与认识基督相比，这些都不值一提。

“不但这样，我也把万事当作是有损的，因为我以认识我主基督耶稣为至宝。为了他，我把万事都拋弃了，看作废物，为了要得着基督。”——《腓立比书》3:8

福音真理

福音揭示了我们自身义的不足。我们无法通过善行、宗教身份或个人成就使自己被神接纳。我们的义是来自对基督的信心。

保罗的渴望不仅仅是了解关于耶稣的事实，而是要亲自认识基督——与祂一同受苦，经历祂复活的大能，并最终在祂里面被寻见。

灵修应用

• 我倾向于用什么来证明自己在神面前是蒙悦纳的？
• 我是信靠基督的义，还是信靠自己的表现？
• 对我来说，认识基督是否比成功、声誉或宗教上的成就更有价值？

(2) 腓立比书 3:12–21 —— 向着目标直奔

正因基督救赎了我们，我们才不断追求祂，并期待祂的再来。保罗明确指出，他尚未达到完全：

“这并不是说我已经得着了，已经完全了，而是竭力追求，好使我可以得着基督耶稣要我得着的了。”——腓立比书 3:12

因此，基督徒的生活既稳固又充满活力。基督已经把我们当作自己的了，但我们仍要在信心、圣洁、顺服和属灵成长方面不断向前迈进。

保罗将那些心思意念专注于属世之事的人，与那些“国籍在天上”的信徒作了对比：

“但我们是天上的公民，切望救主，就是主耶稣基督，从天上降临；国籍在天上。”——《腓立比书》3:20

我们的盼望最终在于基督的再来，届时祂将改变我们这卑贱的身体，使它像祂荣耀的身体一样。

福音真理

我们追求基督并非为了赚取救恩。我们追求祂，是因为基督早已将我们归为祂的子民。

我们的未来并不取决于眼前的挣扎。信徒殷切期盼着那一天——基督将在我们里面完成祂的工作。

灵修应用

• 我是否仍在不断追求基督，还是在灵性上变得自满安于现状了？
• 哪些世俗之事正在分散我的注意力？
• 基督再来的盼望是否塑造了我今天的生活方式？

《腓立比书》第3章的核心信息

我们弃绝对自我的倚靠，因信得着基督，在祂里面不断前进，并将盼望定睛在天上。基督就是我的义（3:1–11）。基督就是我的目标，也是我的盼望（3:12–21）。

Jesus had everything, yet He gave everything. The King became a servant, the Lord embraced the cross, and His followers risked their lives for the gospel. So here is the question: if Christ gave His all, what are we holding back?

(1) Follow the example of Christ’s humility and sacrificial love

Paul directs believers to look to Christ as the supreme example of humility:

Philippians 2:5–8 (ESV)
[5] Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, [6] who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, [7] but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. [8] And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

The person least obligated to demonstrate lowliness is Christ, because He possesses divine status and glory. Yet He willingly humbled Himself, taking the position of a servant and submitting to suffering and death—even death on a cross.

Christian devotion begins with Christ’s example: the One who deserved everything gave Himself completely.

(2) Gospel ministry requires sacrificial commitment

Paul’s fellow workers also demonstrated this same spirit of self-giving service.

Epaphroditus became seriously ill and was “near to death” (Philippians 2:27) because of his service to Christ and his ministry partnership with Paul.

Timothy also displayed wholehearted devotion, as Paul testified:
Philippians 2:30 (ESV)
“For he nearly died for the work of Christ, risking his life to complete what was lacking in your service to me.”

The advancement of the gospel is not sustained by convenience or comfort but by believers who are willing to sacrifice.

(3) Christ-like humility preserves unity in the church

Paul’s teaching on humility in Philippians 2 provides the foundation for his later appeal:

Philippians 4:2 (ESV)
“I entreat Euodia and I entreat Syntyche to agree in the Lord.”

The humility of Christ is not merely a personal virtue; it shapes how believers treat one another. When Christ’s mindset governs the church, personal pride, rivalry, and unnecessary conflicts are replaced by patience, reconciliation, and gospel partnership.

Reflection

Imagine Jesus giving us only His leftovers—His spare time, His remaining strength, His extra resources. But He didn’t. He gave everything. Philippians 2 shows us what true devotion looks like: a life poured out for Christ. Ask ourselves:

(a) In light of the sacrificial examples of Jesus, Epaphroditus, and Timothy, how should we evaluate our own devotion to the work of the gospel?

(b) If Christ gave Himself completely, and if His servants were willing to risk their lives for His mission, is it fitting for us to offer only our leftovers—our spare time, excess resources, and “loose change”?

(c) What would it look like to give ourselves more fully to Christ and His kingdom?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for showing us the perfect humility and sacrificial love of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Teach us to have the mind of Christ—to serve with humility, give generously, and live wholeheartedly for the advancement of Your gospel. Forgive us when we offer You only our leftovers instead of our best. Shape our hearts to value what Christ values and to follow His example of obedience and selfless love. May our lives reflect His servant heart, and may our time, resources, and abilities be used for Your glory and the blessing of others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

最没有义务展现谦卑的人正是基督，因为祂拥有神的地位和荣耀。然而，祂甘愿谦卑自己，取了仆人的形像，顺服至死——甚至死在十字架上。

基督徒的奉献始于基督的榜样：那位本应得着一切的主，却将自己全然献上了。

(2) 福音事工需要牺牲性的奉献

保罗的同工们也展现了这种自我奉献的服务精神。

以巴弗提因侍奉基督并与保罗同工，病重到“几乎要死”（腓立比书 2:27）。

提摩太也展现了全心全意的奉献，正如保罗所见证的：

试想，如果耶稣只给我们祂的“剩饭剩菜”——祂的闲暇时间、祂剩余的力量、祂多余的资源。但他并没有这样做。他献上了全部。《腓立比书》第2章向我们展示了何为真正的奉献：为基督倾尽一生的生命。让我们自问：

(a) 鉴于耶稣、以巴弗提和提摩太所展现的牺牲精神，我们应当如何评估自己对福音事工的奉献程度？

What if I told you that suffering for Christ is not just something God allows—but something He grants? Philippians 1 completely changes how we see hardship, purpose, and the gospel. Stay tuned as we discover three life-changing truths from this powerful chapter.

Philippians 1:29–30
[29] For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake, [30] engaged in the same conflict that you saw I had and now hear that I still have. (ESV)

Most Christians want the joy of following Jesus—but what about the suffering? In Philippians 1, Paul says both faith and suffering are gifts from God.

(1) See the privilege of participating in the gospel. Cherish the opportunity to serve Christ.

Paul warmly remembered the believers at Philippi because they were partners with him in the gospel "from the first day until now" (Philippians 1:5). They shared in God's grace with him, standing alongside him in his imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel (1:7).

Believing in Christ and suffering for His sake are both gracious gifts from God. Christians are privileged to participate in Christ's mission, even when it involves sacrifice.

(2) Advancing the gospel is costly and often difficult.

Paul presents several challenges that accompany faithful gospel ministry:

*He wrestles between his desire "to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better" and his calling "to remain in the flesh" for the spiritual benefit of the churches (1:23–24).

*Not everyone proclaims Christ with pure motives. Some preach "from envy and rivalry" or "out of selfish ambition," seeking personal gain rather than God's glory (1:15–18). Yet Paul rejoices because Christ is proclaimed.

*Opposition and intimidation are real. Believers must not be frightened by their opponents but continue to trust God and remain steadfast (1:28).

Faithful gospel ministry involves sacrifice, perseverance, and unwavering confidence in God's sovereign purposes.

(3) Live a life worthy of the gospel and stand firm together.

Paul exhorts believers: "Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ... standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel" (1:27).

The gospel calls Christians to lives marked by holiness, unity, courage, and steadfast faith. As they strive together for the gospel, they demonstrate the transforming power of Christ and glorify Him before the world.

Application Questions

(a) Gospel Partnership: In what practical ways am I participating in the advance of the gospel through my prayers, giving, serving, or sharing my faith?

(b) Perspective on Suffering: How do I respond when following Christ brings inconvenience, rejection, or hardship? Do I see these experiences as opportunities to honour Christ?

(c) Motives for Ministry: What motivates my service for God? Am I seeking Christ's glory, or am I looking for recognition, approval, or personal success?

(d) Standing Firm: Are there fears or pressures that keep me from living boldly for Christ? How can I trust God and stand firm in one spirit with other believers?

(e) A Worthy Walk: If someone observed my words, attitudes, and actions this week, would they see a life that reflects the gospel of Jesus Christ?

(f) Living for Christ: Can I sincerely say with Paul, "To live is Christ, and to die is gain" (Philippians 1:21)? What changes would help me live more fully for Christ each day?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, Thank You for the privilege of believing in Jesus Christ and for the even greater privilege of participating in the advance of His gospel. Thank You for calling us to be Your servants and co-workers in Your kingdom. Lord, forgive us when fear, selfish ambition, or the desire for comfort keeps us from faithfully following You. Give us the same love for Christ that filled Paul's heart. Help us to rejoice whenever Christ is proclaimed, to remain faithful when we face opposition, and to trust that You are accomplishing Your good purposes even through our trials. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

*反对和恐吓是真实存在的。信徒不可被对手吓倒，而要继续信靠神，坚定不移（1:28）。

(3) 活出配得福音的生命，并同心站立得稳。
