Paul knew danger was coming… but he didn’t stop preaching! At Miletus, he worked with his hands, served the weak, and said: It’s more blessed to give than to receive! What is your pattern today? Ask yourself: Is your church life leaving a mark? Serve, give, encourage—make it count! Let’s dive in.
Acts 20 shows us Paul at the end of his mission in Greece—encouraging believers, even with danger all around. He models servant leadership—working with his hands, caring for the weak, reminding us: It is more blessed to give than to receive. We can learn a few things here:
(1) Paul Completes His Ministry in Greece (20:1–6)
As Paul wraps up his ministry in Greece, we see a consistent pattern: encouragement and vigilance. Multiple times, Paul exhorts believers to remain steadfast in faith and love. Yet even amid encouragement, the reality of opposition looms—there is a plot against Paul. This reminds us that faithful ministry is rarely without resistance. God’s work in us and through us will face trials, but we are called to persevere, trusting that His plan prevails even when danger surrounds us.
(2) Paul Travels to Miletus (20:7–16)
At Miletus, Paul’s commitment shines through a prolonged sermon, despite the natural human tendency to grow weary—or, as in Eutychus’ case, to doze off. Paul’s words, however, were filled with purpose: “I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole counsel of God” (v. 27). In our own lives, God calls us to full devotion, to faithfully share His Word, even when fatigue or distraction tempts us to step back.
(3) Paul Addresses the Ephesian Elders (20:17–35)
Before departing, Paul exemplifies servant leadership. He reminds the elders that he worked with his own hands to provide for himself and his co-workers, modeling humility and diligence. He also emphasizes care for others, especially the weak. His parting words are poignant: “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (v. 35). True ministry is not about recognition or personal gain—it is about selfless service, investing in the spiritual and physical well-being of others.
(4) Paul Journeys to Jerusalem (20:36–21:16)
As Paul prepares to leave, he models a heart that cherishes community and belonging. The question arises for each of us: how does our presence impact the church body? Would our absence be felt? Do we contribute in ways that reflect diligence, love, and faithfulness to God’s mission? Spiritual investment in others—through prayer, teaching, service, or encouragement—leaves a lasting impact on the community of believers.
Reflection: Consider your own place in your church or small group. Are you faithfully giving your time, energy, and heart to build others up? If you were to leave for a season, would your absence be noticed? Paul’s example calls us to serve diligently, love sacrificially, and invest in people with eternal perspective, remembering that faithful service is never in vain.
Prayer
Lord, grant me a heart like Paul’s—bold in proclaiming Your Word, diligent in service, and loving toward others. Help me to invest in Your church with joy, patience, and perseverance, knowing that what I give in Your name bears eternal fruit. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
