What if the greatest danger to your faith isn’t persecution—but going back to what feels familiar? Hebrews 3 gives us a powerful choice: Moses was faithful, but Jesus is greater. So when faith gets difficult, don’t go back. Choose the Highest. Choose Christ.
Hebrews 3 calls believers to keep their eyes on Jesus rather than return to what was familiar, emphasizing Christ’s superiority over Moses and warning against hardening the heart.
The first readers of Hebrews were facing a difficult temptation. They were being pulled toward what was familiar—the religious system established through Moses at Mount Sinai. Moses was deeply respected. He had led Israel out of Egypt, received God’s law, and faithfully served God’s people.
But the writer of Hebrews calls them to look higher.
“Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession.” — Hebrews 3:1 (ESV)
The answer to their struggle was not simply to remember that Jesus was good. They needed to consider Jesus—to fix their attention on Him and recognize who He truly is.
(1) Jesus Is Greater Than Moses
Hebrews 3 does not belittle Moses. In fact, Moses was faithful in God’s house. But there is a fundamental difference:
“For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house.”— Hebrews 3:3
Moses was a faithful servant in God’s house. Jesus is the Son over God’s house. That distinction changes everything. Moses belonged to the system God established under the old covenant. Jesus is the One through whom God brings the fulfillment of His saving purposes. Moses pointed forward; Christ is the fulfillment.
The temptation for the Hebrews was therefore not merely to choose between two religious traditions. They were being tempted to leave the greater for the lesser, the fulfillment for the shadow, the Son for the servant.
(2) Choose the highest. Choose Christ: Familiar Does Not Always Mean Faithful
One of the strongest temptations in the Christian life is the desire to return to what is familiar. The Israelites themselves experienced this. When their journey became difficult, they looked back toward Egypt. Egypt was the place from which God had delivered them, yet in moments of fear they remembered it as something desirable.
Hebrews 3 recalls this history:
“Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”— Hebrews 3:7–8
The danger was not that they had never experienced God. The Israelites had witnessed His mighty works. They had seen His faithfulness. Yet they hardened their hearts. This is a solemn warning for us.
We can know the truth and still resist it. We can experience God's faithfulness and still desire to return to what is comfortable. We can begin the journey with Christ and later become attracted to the security of the familiar.
The question is not simply, “What did I used to believe?” The question is: “Am I still listening to the voice of Christ today?”
(3) Keep Your Heart Soft
Hebrews 3 repeatedly emphasizes the heart.
“Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God.”— Hebrews 3:12
Spiritual drifting rarely begins with an obvious decision to reject God. It can begin much more quietly—with neglect, unbelief, distraction, disappointment, or a gradual preference for something else. That is why the writer says:
“But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called ‘today,’ that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.” — Hebrews 3:13
We need one another. Christian faith was never intended to be lived in isolation. We need brothers and sisters who will encourage us when our faith becomes weak, remind us of Christ when our attention wanders, and lovingly warn us when our hearts begin to harden.
(4) Hold Fast to Christ
Hebrews 3:6 gives us the positive response:
“But Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.” The call is simple:
Hold fast.
- When following Jesus becomes difficult, hold fast.
- When the familiar seems more attractive, hold fast.
- When obedience costs something, hold fast.
- When doubts arise, hold fast.
- When the world offers easier alternatives, hold fast.
Why? Because Jesus is worthy. The writer does not tell us to hold fast merely through sheer determination. He directs our attention to the One who is greater than Moses, greater than the old covenant shadows, and faithful as the Son over God's house.
Our perseverance begins with our vision of Christ. If our eyes are fixed on lesser things, we will eventually be drawn away. But when we continually consider Jesus, we are reminded that there is nowhere higher to go.
Reflection
Perhaps the greatest question Hebrews 3 asks us is this: What am I tempted to return to because it feels familiar, safe, or comfortable? And then: Have I considered Jesus afresh The Christian life is not a call to abandon everything that came before Christ without understanding God's purposes. Hebrews itself honours Moses and the testimony of Scripture.
Rather, it teaches us to recognize that Christ is the highest fulfillment of God's revelation and saving work. Moses was faithful as a servant. Christ is faithful as the Son. Therefore, when the choice is between returning to what is familiar and continuing with Jesus, choose the highest. Choose Christ.
Prayer
Father in Heaven. Thank You for sending us Jesus, Your beloved Son. Keep our hearts faithful and our eyes fixed on Him. When we are tempted to turn back to what is familiar, remind us that nothing compares with Christ. Help us to hear Your voice, trust Your Word, and hold firmly to our hope in Jesus. In Jesus’ name.
