What if the rest your soul desperately needs isn’t found in taking a break—but in a Person? Hebrews 4 points us to Jesus, our great High Priest. Come to Him, trust Him, and find true rest in Christ.

The Old Testament high priest entered the earthly Holy of Holies through the curtain, but only once a year and with the blood of sacrifice. Hebrews presents Jesus as the greater High Priest: He has passed through the heavens themselves and entered God's presence on behalf of His people.

This makes Hebrews 4:14–16 deeply pastoral:

*“Let us hold fast our confession.” Because Christ has already passed through the heavens, believers have a secure basis for persevering faith.

*“He is able to sympathize with our weaknesses.” Jesus is not a distant or indifferent priest. He experienced genuine temptation and human weakness, yet remained without sin.

*“Let us then with confidence draw near.” The appropriate response to Christ's priesthood is not fearful distance but confident access to God.

*“That we may receive mercy and find grace.” The throne before which believers come is specifically called the throne of grace. God's holiness does not make His people unwelcome when they approach through Christ; it is precisely Christ's priestly work that gives them access.

*“To help in time of need.” God's rest is not an invitation to escape responsibility or difficulty. It is the settled confidence that comes from trusting God's provision rather than attempting to establish our own security.

So the passage moves from warning to invitation. Hebrews 4:1 warns us not to presume upon God's promise of rest, while 4:14–16 shows where we should turn: to Jesus, our great High Priest. There is also a beautiful progression in the imagery:

Earthly tabernacle → earthly high priest → curtain → Holy of Holies → Christ → heavens → throne of grace.

The earthly priest entered God's presence temporarily and symbolically. Christ has entered God's presence decisively and permanently. Therefore, the believer does not have to wonder whether God can be approached. Christ has already gone before us.

And that gives a richer meaning to the command to “strive to enter that rest” (4:11). Christian striving is not striving to make Christ's priestly work sufficient. It is striving to trust and remain faithful to the sufficiency of the work Christ has already accomplished.

In that sense, Hebrews 4:14–16 is an answer to the anxiety of Hebrews 4:1: the way into God's rest is found in holding fast to Jesus and drawing near to God through Him.

Application

Therefore, embrace this great High Priest. Hold fast to Christ, draw near to Him with confidence, and find true rest in Him and in all that He has provided for us. Our rest is not ultimately found in circumstances, wealth, success, or freedom from life’s burdens. It is found in Christ—the One who has accomplished what we could never accomplish for ourselves and who invites us to come boldly to the throne of grace.

In Christ, we can cease striving to establish our own righteousness and security. We can rest in His finished work, trust His provision, and receive His mercy and grace “to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16).

Prayer

Heavenly Father. Thank You for giving us Jesus, our great High Priest. Help us to hold fast to our faith, draw near to Your throne of grace, and rest fully in Christ and His finished work. When we are weary and burdened, remind us of Your mercy and grace. Teach us to trust You and find true rest in Your Son. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
