Have you ever felt too guilty to come to God? Too broken, too weak, too ashamed? Hebrews 5 gives you incredible hope: Jesus is the High Priest who understands your weakness—and He is powerful enough to save you.

Scripture Focus:
“Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered.” — Hebrews 5:8 (ESV)

Hebrews 5 points us to one of the most comforting truths of the gospel: Jesus is the perfect High Priest for you.

Under the Old Covenant, the high priest represented the people before God. He offered sacrifices for sin and understood human weakness because he himself was a sinner. But Jesus is different. He is the Son of God, yet He willingly entered our human experience and suffered. He understands our weakness without ever sharing in our sin.

(1) Jesus understands your weakness

Hebrews tells us that a high priest is able to “deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness” (Hebrews 5:2). We often imagine that God is disappointed with us when we struggle. We may hesitate to pray when we have failed, sinned, or become spiritually discouraged.

But Jesus does not minister to us from a place of distance. He knows what suffering feels like. He knows rejection, temptation, sorrow, pain, and obedience that comes at a cost. Yet He remained sinless. That means when you come to Jesus in repentance, you are not coming to someone who does not understand. You are coming to the One who understands you perfectly and can save you completely.

(2) Jesus obeyed the Father perfectly

Hebrews 5:8 says: “Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered.”

This does not mean Jesus was previously disobedient and needed to learn how to obey. Rather, His obedience was demonstrated and fully experienced through the suffering He willingly endured. At Gethsemane, Jesus submitted Himself to the Father's will. At the cross, He endured suffering and death for sinners. His obedience was not merely theoretical.

Jesus obeyed when obedience was costly. This gives us tremendous confidence. Our salvation does not rest on how perfectly we obey God. It rests on the perfect obedience of Christ, who became “the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him” (Hebrews 5:9).

(3) Jesus is the source of eternal salvation

The heart of Hebrews 5 is not simply that Jesus understands us. It is that Jesus saves us.  We don't merely need a priest who sympathises with our problems. We need a priest who can deal with our sin.

Jesus offered Himself once for all. His sacrifice is sufficient because He is the Son of God and the perfect High Priest. So when Satan reminds you of your sin, you don't have to defend yourself. When your conscience condemns you, you don't have to pretend you're righteous. When you recognize how far short you fall, you can look to Christ.

Your hope is not: “I have been good enough.” Your hope is: “Christ is sufficient.”

(4) Don't remain spiritually immature

The latter part of Hebrews 5 contains a warning. The writer tells his readers that they have become “dull of hearing” and still need “milk, not solid food” (Hebrews 5:11–12).

This is a reminder that salvation is not the end of Christian growth. God wants us to mature. A growing Christian learns to discern good and evil, understands God's Word more deeply, and increasingly lives according to the truth of the gospel.

Spiritual maturity doesn't mean knowing everything. It means becoming increasingly dependent upon Christ and increasingly shaped by His Word.

Reflection

Consider these questions today:

  • Do I approach Jesus confidently when I have sinned, or do I hide from Him?
  • Am I trusting Christ's perfect obedience, or secretly trying to establish my own righteousness?
  • Am I growing in my understanding of God's Word?
  • Is there an area where God is calling me to deeper obedience?
  • Do I believe that Jesus truly understands my struggles?

Prayer

Heavenly Father. Thank You for giving us Jesus, our perfect High Priest. Thank You that He understands our weakness, yet He remained without sin. Thank You for His perfect obedience and His willingness to suffer for our salvation. When I fail, keep me from running away from You. Teach me to run toward Christ, trusting His righteousness rather than my own. Help me to grow spiritually. Give me a hunger for Your Word and a heart that desires obedience. Where I am immature, strengthen me. Where I am discouraged, remind me of Your grace. Where obedience is costly, help me follow Christ's example. Thank You that my salvation rests not upon my perfection but upon the finished work and perfect obedience of Jesus. In Jesus' name, Amen.
