READ: https://www.esv.org/john8:31–59
Jesus said, “The truth will set you free.” In John 8, truth confronts pride—and hostility follows. Why does the human heart resist the very truth that can save it? Some want truth until it exposes them. Religious people rejected Jesus, attacked His identity, resisted His word, and even tried to stone Him. Today, the same question remains: will you attack the truth or accept it?
In John 8, Jesus distinguishes between those who merely hear His word and those who abide in it: “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples… and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31–32)
Instead of receiving Him, many relied on their religious identity: “We are offspring of Abraham.” Yet Jesus exposed a deeper bondage—slavery to sin. Physical descent could not replace spiritual faith.
The statement in John 8:41 “We were not born of sexual immorality…” appears to carry more than a simple denial. It as a hostile insinuation directed at Jesus Christ and the unusual circumstances surrounding His birth. Instead of responding humbly to Jesus’ exposure of their spiritual condition, they shifted toward personal attack and insult.
Throughout John 8, the opposition escalates:
- first questioning His authority,
- then rejecting His truth,
- then insulting His background,
- then accusing Him of demonic influence,
- and finally attempting to stone Him.
Are you doing anything similar today in a revised form? This reflects a deeper spiritual principle: when truth confronts hardened hearts, people often attack the messenger rather than repent before God.
Jesus explains the root issue:
“You seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you.” (v.37)
“You are of your father the devil… he is a liar and the father of lies.” (v.44)
Satan opposes truth because truth exposes darkness. When people reject God’s Word while clinging to pride, they echo his rebellion.
Yet Jesus offers life in the midst of rejection:
“If anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.” (v.51)
“Before Abraham was, I am.” (v.58)
He is not only speaking truth—He is the eternal “I AM,” God Himself. The chapter ends with a decision point: accept the truth and worship Christ, or attack the truth and reject Him. Today, the same choice remains.
- Do not harden your heart against God’s Word.
- Do not replace faith with religious identity.
- Abide in Christ’s Word and walk in freedom.
The truth does not enslave—it sets free.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, give us humble hearts that receive Your truth even when it convicts us. Protect us from pride, unbelief, and hardness of heart. Help us not to resist or attack Your Word, but to abide in it. Lead us to Jesus, who alone gives true freedom and eternal life. Fill us with love for Your truth and obedience by Your Spirit. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
阅读 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=john 8%3A31-59&version=CNVS
