What if the way to God isn’t a road you have to find, but a Person you need to know? In John 14, Jesus makes an extraordinary claim: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” Today, let’s discover why Jesus Himself is the Way.

Scripture focus: John 14:10–11 (ESV)
[10] “Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. [11] Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.”

Jesus speaks these words to His disciples on the night before His crucifixion. They are troubled because Jesus has told them that He is going away. In this context, Jesus is preparing them to trust Him even though they will soon no longer see Him physically.

When Jesus says, “I am in the Father and the Father is in me,” He is making a profound claim about His unique relationship with God the Father. Jesus is not merely a messenger who tells people about God. He is the Son who perfectly reveals the Father. He is describing the profound unity and intimate communion between the Father and the Son. The Father and Son are not two separate gods, nor are they the same Person. The Father is in the Son, and the Son is in the Father, while each remains personally distinct.

Jesus gives two reasons why His disciples should believe Him.

(1) Jesus' Words Come from the Father

Jesus says: “The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority.”

His teaching is not based on human opinion or personal philosophy. Jesus speaks with divine authority because He speaks the words of the Father. This means that when we listen to Jesus, we are not simply receiving advice from a great religious teacher. We are hearing the truth of God revealed through the Son.

This is why Christianity is not ultimately about following a set of teachings. It is about trusting the One who speaks them.

(2) Jesus' Works Reveal the Father

Jesus continues: “The Father who dwells in me does his works.”

His works provide visible evidence of His identity and mission. His miracles, compassion, authority over creation, forgiveness of sins, and ultimately His death and resurrection all point beyond themselves to who Jesus is.

Jesus tells His disciples that if they struggle to believe His words, they should at least consider “the works themselves.”

His works testify that He is not merely claiming to represent God—He uniquely reveals God.

(3) Jesus Is the Way Because He Reveals the Father

This brings us back to the central statement of John 14:6: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Notice that Jesus does not say, “I will show you the way.” He says: “I am the way.”

The Way is not primarily a road, a religious system, a philosophy, or a list of rules. The Way is a Person. We come to the Father through Jesus because Jesus is in the Father and the Father is in Him. To know Jesus is to know the Father.

Application

This is at the heart of the gospel. We cannot find our way to God through our morality, religious achievements, good works, or sincerity. We need a Saviour who brings us to the Father. Jesus does not merely point us toward salvation. Jesus Himself is our salvation.

Therefore, the question is not simply: “Am I on the right road?” The deeper question is: “Do I know Jesus Christ and trust Him?” Our faith rests on both His words and His works. His words reveal who He is, and His works confirm His divine identity. At the cross, Jesus accomplished the work necessary for our salvation, and in His resurrection He demonstrated His victory over sin and death.

Reflection

  • Am I trusting Jesus Himself, or merely trusting my religious beliefs?
  • Do I recognize Jesus as more than a teacher—as the Son who reveals the Father?
  • Am I allowing His words to shape my understanding of God?
  • Does my life demonstrate that I truly trust the One who is “the way, and the truth, and the life”?

Takeaway
*Jesus is not merely the One who shows us the way to God. He is the Way to God.

  • We do not earn our way to the Father.
  • We do not discover our own way to the Father.
  • We come to the Father through Jesus Christ.

And because Jesus is in the Father and the Father is in Him, we can trust that when we come to Christ, we are coming to the One who perfectly reveals and brings us to the Father.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Jesus, the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Help us to trust Him completely and follow Him faithfully. May we know You more deeply through Your Son and live each day according to Your truth. Strengthen our faith and keep our hearts close to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

阅读 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=john 14%3A1-14&version=CNVS
