Cosmetics, which possibly comes from the Koine Greek word “kosmeo” (a noun) is something many people wear today. But you can wear the best brands and still hide your faith. But what if your character became your clothing? Titus 2:10 says our lives should “adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour.” So—what are you wearing?
Scripture Focus: Titus 2:10
[10] not pilfering, but showing all good faith, so that in everything they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior. (ESV)
Titus 2 reminds us that sound doctrine is not merely something we know; it is something we wear (kosmosin, a verb). The gospel should be visible in the way we speak, behave, relate to others, and fulfil our responsibilities.
Cosmetics can make the outside beautiful—but Titus 2 calls us to make the Gospel beautiful by the way we live. Paul addresses different groups within the church, showing that each has a particular way of adorning the doctrine of God our Saviour.
(1) Older Men — Wear the Doctrine with Godly Character
Titus 2:2 Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness.
Older men are called to display the maturity that should come with years of walking with God. They are to be sober-minded, not easily carried away; dignified, worthy of respect; and self-controlled, governing their desires and reactions.
But their maturity is not merely outward seriousness. They are to be sound in faith, love, and steadfastness. Their lives should communicate that Christ is trustworthy and that the gospel produces enduring character.
To wear the doctrine: Let the years of your life testify to the faithfulness of God. May younger believers see in you a faith that has been tested, a love that has deepened, and a steadfastness that has endured.
(2) Older Women — Wear the Doctrine with Reverent Living
Titus 2:3 Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good...”
Older women have a significant ministry of influence. Their lives are to be reverent in behaviour, reflecting a life conscious of God.
Paul specifically warns against destructive speech and enslavement to worldly appetites. Instead, older women are to “teach what is good.” Their godly example becomes a living classroom for the younger women.
To wear the doctrine: Let your speech, habits, relationships, and wisdom make the beauty of the gospel visible. A godly older woman does not merely tell the next generation what Christianity teaches—she shows them what a life shaped by Christ looks like.
(3) Young Women — Wear the Doctrine in Love and Faithfulness
Titus 2:4–5 “...to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands...”
Paul highlights the ordinary spheres of life: marriage, motherhood, home, purity, kindness, and self-control. The Christian faith is to be lived not only in church but also in the seemingly ordinary responsibilities of daily life.
For a young woman, loving her husband and children, cultivating purity, showing kindness, and faithfully caring for her household can become a beautiful testimony to the transforming power of the gospel.
This passage does not make a woman's worth dependent upon marriage or motherhood; rather, Paul addresses the particular responsibilities of the women in the context of the first-century church and household.
The purpose is striking: “that the word of God may not be reviled.”
To wear the doctrine: Let the gospel shape the way you love, serve, speak, work, and relate to those closest to you. The people who know us most intimately should be able to see the difference Christ makes.
(4) Younger Men — Wear the Doctrine through Self-Control
Titus 2:6–8 “Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled.”
For younger men, Paul places particular emphasis on self-control. This is followed by a broader call for Titus himself to be an example of good works, integrity, dignity, and sound speech.
Young men have many opportunities to display what governs their lives: ambitions, desires, relationships, work, entertainment, money, and words.
Christian maturity means that our passions do not become our masters. Christ is Lord.
To wear the doctrine: Let your life demonstrate that the gospel produces a man who can govern himself because he belongs to Christ. Let your speech be trustworthy, your conduct honorable, your work diligent, and your character consistent.
The challenge is not simply to look like a Christian, but to live in such a way that others can see that Christ rules your life.
(5) Bondservants — Wear the Doctrine through Faithful Work
Titus 2:9–10 “Bondservants are to be submissive to their own masters in everything; they are to be well-pleasing, not argumentative, not pilfering, but showing all good faith...”
Paul addresses bondservants within the social and economic realities of the first-century Roman world. The instruction emphasises faithfulness, honesty, respect, and integrity in their work and relationships. They were not to steal, be argumentative, or merely perform outwardly when watched. Instead, they were to demonstrate “all good faith.”
And again, Paul gives the great purpose: “so that in everything they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior.” To wear the doctrine: Our Christianity should be visible in how we work. Whether our work is prestigious or unnoticed, whether we receive recognition or not, our integrity can display the gospel.
The Common Thread: “In Everything”
Notice how comprehensive Paul's vision is.
- Older men wear the doctrine through mature character.
- Older women wear the doctrine through reverent living and godly instruction.
- Young women wear the doctrine through loving and faithful relationships and responsibilities.
- Younger men wear the doctrine through self-control and exemplary conduct.
- Bondservants wear the doctrine through faithful, honest work.
And over all of them stands Titus 2:10: “...so that in everything they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior.” God bless!
