Believers of The LORD throughout history were frequently challenged to exhibit courage, compassion, and standing up for God’s truth even in difficult times.
Scripture Focus
“When Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, a eunuch who was in the king’s house, heard that they had put Jeremiah into the cistern—the king was sitting in the Benjamin Gate—Ebed-melech went from the king’s house and said to the king, ‘My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they did to Jeremiah the prophet by casting him into the cistern, and he will die there of hunger, for there is no bread left in the city.’ Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, ‘Take thirty men with you from here, and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies.’” — Jeremiah 38:7–10 (ESV)
Devotional Reflection:
In the chaos of Jerusalem’s last days before its fall to Babylon, one man’s courage stood out: Ebed-melech, a foreigner, a eunuch, and a servant. He had no political power and no influence by worldly standards—yet he acted when no one else would.
Jeremiah, God’s faithful prophet, had been thrown into a muddy cistern to die—punished for speaking truth. While others turned a blind eye, Ebed-melech stepped in. He risked his life and reputation to plead for Jeremiah’s rescue.
What made Ebed-melech different? Compassion. Courage. Conviction. In a city full of compromise, he dared to stand up for righteousness. His intervention saved the life of a prophet—and showed us that God uses unlikely people for His purposes.
Personal Application:
(1) God Can Use Anyone Who Is Willing
Ebed-melech was an outsider, but God used him to bring justice. Your background doesn’t disqualify you. God honours faith and boldness.
(2) Stand Up for Truth and Righteousness
When truth is under attack or someone is suffering unjustly, will you speak up? Your voice might be the only one—and that might be enough.
(3) Small Acts Have Eternal Impact
Ebed-melech didn’t preach or perform miracles. He simply acted in obedience and compassion. Sometimes rescuing one person is your greatest kingdom work.
Prayer:
Lord, make me courageous like Ebed-melech. Give me eyes to see injustice, a heart that responds with compassion, and boldness to act when others stay silent. Help me to trust that You can use my voice, even if I feel small or unqualified. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
