Firstly, the LORD at many times in history chose compassion on His people rather than letting go on them the full measure of His wrath. Can we think of any reason(s) for this?
Isaiah 14:1 For the LORD will have compassion on Jacob and will again choose Israel, and will set them in their own land, and sojourners will join them and will attach themselves to the house of Jacob. (ESV)
The immense calling that you have—the attachment of those outside the kingdom of God "to the house of Jacob". This is somewhat like marcotting onto the tree of God's people. The plan of God's blessings of the nations (Genesis 12:1–3) remains to be fulfilled. How can God abandon this great plan? How can we leave this great plan out of our life's plans? What action items in your calendar now contribute to this?
ACTION: Respond to God's grace with thankfulness and seek out opportunities in church to contribute to the great plan of blessing the nations and carrying forward this mission given to Abram and his descendants.
Secondly, the LORD at many times in history chose to deal thoroughly with the arrogant, the oppressor and the insolent:-
Isaiah 14:3–7
[3] When the LORD has given you rest from your pain and turmoil and the hard service with which you were made to serve, [4] you will take up this taunt against the king of Babylon:
“How the oppressor has ceased,
the insolent fury ceased!
[5] The LORD has broken the staff of the wicked,
the scepter of rulers,
[6] that struck the peoples in wrath
with unceasing blows,
that ruled the nations in anger
with unrelenting persecution.
[7] The whole earth is at rest and quiet;
they break forth into singing. (ESV)
In dealing with Babylon (14:8–23), Assyria (14:24–27) and Philistia (14:28–32), we recognise the LORD's power, justice and inevitable response to unrighteousness and sins that pollute the earth and humanity. The taunt against these superpowers and opponents pay back partially the harm inflicted by them on God's people.
Isaiah 14:27
[27] For the LORD of hosts has purposed,
and who will annul it?
His hand is stretched out,
and who will turn it back? (ESV)
ACTION: Response to God's righteousness by striving to lead holy lives, thus avoiding the same dire consequences of others who have gone before us in the painful history of the world's great empires. The wise learn from the mistakes of others quickly, shouldn't you?
